Now the KEY

Having the newbie Great Adventure with issues, problems and fun. But, last night after pulling into the RV park north of Valentine NE connecting to power and fresh water. The storage bay key on our brand new 2016 Georgetown 364 broke in half while using it. Of course we do not have the 2nd set of keys with us.?On the phone with CoachNet, nothing, Good Sam some help. Connecting up with a locksmith in Rapid City to make a new one. Seriously a key just broke, and fortunately we have money for a new key and more fun. Do you all have any suggestions? Is there some trick. It's crazy and we're headed to see CrazyHorse, George,Tom,Ab and Teddy. Happy Trails.

You can buy extra keys on EBay. also get some graphite lube for the locks.

I think they want in now. If the key is broke in there you could take a small screwdriver and maybe get it wedge in the key hole next to the broken key and turn it.

I would not worry about damaging the lock most RV locks are very cheap to replace.

I change out all the doors and storage bin locks to take the same key.

Exact same thing happened to us. The locks are stiff and the keys are junk. They should have given you two sets of keys.

Try these:

A. Stick the "half" key into the lock anyway, try to turn it to unlock.
B. Call the dealer, get the second set...DO IT!!
C. If one of the other compartments is unlocked, take off the lock - just a few screws, take it to a locksmith. Get a new key, only a couple of dollars.
D. Is any part of the key sticking out? Use needle nose pliers to pull it out.

Luckily when ours broke I was able to stick the remaining part of the key in and twist it to the unlocked position. I took off the lock, got out the key, went to a local locksmith had 5 durable keys made, done.

Good Luck!

I believed they left the second set of keys at home. We always travel with two sets of keys for everything.

If you still have the head of the key it should have a number on it (all metal key). You can check with local RV stores and see if they have any spares. If it is the south co key with the black plastic head you may have to contact the company. The number is stamped on the metal shaft. Hope this helps.

We ordered a batch of something like 8 keys on Amazon for like 10 bucks.. They are all the same on MH's so it is a universal key.. Kind of scary but it happened to us so I put lube in the key holes.. In fact you could probably ask a neighbor with a gas motorhome to borrow their key but that wont help with the broken one

Many RV use the same small selection of keys for the storage compartment. Check the head of the key for a number, Then ask other campers near by if they have that key. If you can get the broken piece out you may be able to borrow one. Sometimes you can tap rapidly on the lock and the vibration will make the broken piece move out enough to grab it with needle nose pliers.

The "741" key is probably the most used key in the RV industry. If you can get the old one out one of your neighbors should have one you can use.
I always use dry graphite to lube my locks. It doesn't get gummy or run.

Just change all the locks to match your main door key. Costs like $25 to change 5 locks to match.

I had a key brake of in a storage compartment lock. I took it to a locksmith shop they were able to get it out and made a new key. We have the two sets that came with George plus a complete set that stays in the glove box of the toad.

Mebbe... I was merely correcting a 741 post.

Locksmith should be able to cut key by code on the key.
Also be able to get broken part out as long as you Don't mangle it.

I wanted everyone to know that Harvey's Lock Smith in Rapid City is the best. A referral from Good Sam. We met them at their shop on a Sunday. We had both parts of the key so they were able to match the old key. I have 7 extras. Suggestions on where to hide them in case of another issue? Live and learn.
