Old Tired Gasser... Power Help

Good evening folks,

I am going to be keeping my old and tired 1999 Ford V10 gasser for a bit longer... what can I do to help with the power/fall off especially in the hills/mountains?

She is a ~35 footer with the gasser and roughly 85k on the odo. I am updating it for a few more years of use before a trade up.

BUT she sucks in the hills/mountains or passing or merging. What can I do to help this, safely? The headers were already done. I don't mind beinng stuck at 60 on the interstate with the toad on level ground, but even rather simple hills she is down to 45 (even with the pedal down) extremely quickly.

Please help.

Thanks!

Cold air intake?

https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#h...old+air+intake

Gotta get the air out as well as in.

https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#h...xhaust+upgrade

Chip?

https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#h...=ford+v10+chip

HP and money are relative, more power = more money.

I don't want to drop a fortune, it's an old class a after all, but I do know I have to spend money to get results.

As old an muscle car guy, do CAIs actually do a damn thing? In stock trim on a car they do next to nothing.

A chip or prgarammer are already on the list, BUT which ones give the best results for the money? Lol

Thanks for the reply

How about a lower gear for the rear end.

I do not think they ever made much of a difference for me... I have a snorkel on my Jeep and a KN CAI in my TV. Other than the fact they both make a sucking noise from the air getting pulled in I think it is all in my head for any power increase. I am sure there is a bit but not what it says on the box... ADD 50HP with this sticker alone!!!

CAI

Do they work, depends on who you talk to and what time of the day it is.

What I have seen, people put on a cold air but do nothing to get the air out seem to be the ones who swear they are a POS.

Two guys at my work run them and both have upgraded the exhaust and swear they do work well.

I'm sure they do something better than the bent up plastic that had all these kinks in the piping stock intake.

in my opinion it ain't worth moving from stock. take the money you were gonna spend on it and put it towards the new rig.....

i have spent so much money over the years on mods for diesel and gas engines, and now, after 25 yrs of screwing around and wasting money and time, i just leave my engines stock.

that old gasser won't be any better that it is now.

Have you ever had the transmission fluid changed?
It may help a little if you haven't done it at all.
Have you ever added any injector cleaner in the gas tank.
This will clean your injector tips and valves for better combustion which could help increase HP and torque a little. This is what I use.
1 Qt bottle in my 80 gallon tank on long trips once a year.
Walmart has it for about $10
Good luck.

Look into an SCT tuner from 5Star Tuning.

The banks i bought for my (gone) Silverado looks almost identical to the stock one. not a lot of room under there. Never felt the 39+ horsepower or the 89 + lb-ft of torque.I did get more turbo whine.

Servicing my transmission on my 06 ram with 165000 on it made a world of difference.

Three things have t happen to make HP/torque. Air in, correct combustion then air out. Anything you can do to improve any of these can be helpful. You mention headers which should have helped but could have hurt if not done correctly. You will need to have the carb/intake system adjusted to take advantage of the quicker exhausting of burnt gasses or all your work is for naught. Take it to a shop that offers to dyno engines and tunes them correctly according to the true rear wheel HP being put out by the engine/trans combination. It is hard to believe how much difference getting everything to function correctly together can make.

if the headers are not equal length they are not doing what they were designed for.

Also very true. Tuned and equal length mean a lot to headers along with matching the size of the tubes. With headers more can be less!!

KN Intake & Banks Exhaust + Programmer

Hello. We bought a 28 foot Lexington last year with the V10. We could tell the first time we used the motorhome, that the engine had a breathing problem (2,000 miles trip. Utah to California). I have had both Intake and Exhaust systems on most of my vehicles (Ford diesels, Chevy diesels, Dodge V10, Porsche, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, etc.). When I decided to do something about the lack of power with the E450 V10, I used the Bank's Powerpak System with the Autominder. The headers are true equal length and the exhaust went in without much work. I used the K&N intake (instead of the Bank's. The K&N seemed to have a better design). Now when I pull uphill, the rpms are 2,000 to 2,500 lower. The E450 doesn't need to downshift nearly as often. Before it would rev to over 5,000 rpms. It never does that now. My gas mileage has gone up as well. On our trip to California (without a trailer) we averaged about 9 mpg. Recently I pulled a trailer (total combined weight of 5,500 lbs) and we averaged 12 mpg. During this trip (SLC to Moab) I was passing other similar motorhomes and vehicles. I could drive at almost any speed. On the really steep hills I was still going 60-65 mph. I know that I will never probably recoup my money but the saved time is definitely worth the cost (I am also slightly vain). We can also go further on a tank of gas. Good Luck. Kim.
