Onan Gen Question

A friend of mine has an 8000 Onan. A while back, he started it and discovered that he had quite a few heavy users running. The genny shut down and won't start. Just clicks like a dead batty.

He has checked and has no tripped breaker (that he can find) and isn't getting 12+ VDC at the starter. Yet, he jumped the starter and it turned over.

When I start my Genny (5500 Onan), it runs for about 30 seconds to get RPM's up before it kicks in.

Is starting a generator with a load a bad thing?

Bill

It's not a good thing.

This will sound kind of silly, but get him to check his oil level.....believe it or not....low oil, it won't run

The only other thing I can think of is, if it is an on board generator....crazy as this may sound also.....could be low on fuel. Of course these are simple checks.

Hope you figured it out

It could also be a bad starter solenoid relay.

And, from experience on a boat, if there is anything wrong with the generator itself - bad brushes, for example - and it can't make electricity, the engine won't run, either.

What year is this generator?

Is he getting a diagnostic code in the form of a series of blinking lights on the start switch? Also, might he be due for a 150-hour service? The generator will shut down and not restart if that's the case.
