Onan Generator Error code 58

Merry Christmas to all. My generator will shut down after a few minutes. The error code reads 58. The manual says go see seek service and the problem involves high exhaust gas temperature. Any thoughts?

Are you at high altitude?
Have you checked oil level?

If you just changed oil what weight oil did you add and how much?
Have you rechecked the oil level on a level surface?
I always look at what was don't after it ran good and that leave the oil.
My Onan 5500 says
Oil API Class types SJ SH or SG type 15W40 two quarts

Complete oil change with 2qts of 10w30. The ground is level. The oil level before the oil change was about a 1/2 qt low.

From Onan manual online:

HIGH EXHAUST TEMPERATURE—CODE NO. 58
(Exhaust temperature exceeded design limits due to lack of water delivered to the exhaust/water mixer)
Corrective Action:
1. Check for and clean a blocked sea water strainer. If above the water line, fill the strainer with water
to assist priming.
2. Inspect the siphon break (if provided) for proper operation.
3. Check for a worn raw water impeller and replace as necessary (p. 4-12).
4. Clean the heat exchanger (p. 4-8).

Guud Luck!

If this started right after the oil change, are you sure you didn't put too much oil in it? I think when I changed mine I had about a 1/4 of a quart left. To much oil will cause foaming and engine shutdown.

Could be as it was full. The specs call for 2 qts. I'm not able to check but will when I get back to the rv.

What kind of generator are you looking at?
Sounds like a boat engine maintenance manual.
Ours are air cooled and don't use sea water. LOL
Is this a joke?

Update---took the rv to the shop. Turns out the gen set had a bad magneto which caused to much fuel to be burned which in turn caused the catalytic convertor to overheat which caused the auto shut down. All fixed by Onan under warranty. This likely caused the shutdowns I was experiencing while running both AC units. We will see this summer. I found the guys at Lonestar RV in Killeen TX to be very knowledgable and offer great service. Just in time to head to Mardi Gras and onto Key West!

I didn't know the Onan had a catalytic convertor.
I looked in my manual and it shows a spark arrestor but no catalytic convertor.
