Portable supplemental braking

Anyone have feedback and experience with the patriot system made by blue ox? I've read some great reviews and also several terrible ones about burning up people's brakes on toad. I'm thinking about purchasing one. I really like the road master invisi brake literature but would rather go with a portable unit that can be used in multiple toads and won't need to be repurchased when I get car trading itch again.

We have one and it spends its time on a shelf in the shop.. Waste of money to me.. It only works under extreme braking.. Has no effect in town under normal stop and go driving

We bought the Patriot last year when we picked up our Dodge Dakota. We bought it new on E bay for 60% list price. We like it --easy to set up and when we did an emergency stop the toad left skid marks on the road so we know it works great. The motorhome monitor on the dash lets you know its working, we've had no problem with brakes not releasing.
For multiple toads you will need a breakaway switch in each vehicle because it is permanently mounted and tethered to the motorhome hitch. We also got the Blue Ox Adventa tow bar, the one that folds and mounts on the toad, so I can tow the toad with my other vehicle if necessary.

RVNut, have you tried adjusting the sensitivity on the dash remote? For in town work I adjust mine to 2or3, interstate I put on 5. I can see it working as the light goes on and off.

Need to make sure you have a 12v power source. I have to pull a fuse in my toad when towing, which kills power to cigarette lighter. So had to wire another one for brake. I honestly don't see any difference in braking with or without Patriot. But most states require you have one.

It's not portable but I have the stay & play by SMI and it works really well

We run with a patriot brake. Always installed and set gain to two or three..

Ditto to kgreen's reply. I have the SMI Stay-In-Play Duo braking system and love it. Once you get it installed it's a simple flick of a switch to activate. No installing and uninstalling a portable unit.
