Power brake noise

Alright, probably just a newbie question but...

When I jump over into the drivers seat to startup my much loved 2015 Georgetown 351 and prior to starting the engine, out of habit I will step on the brake pedal. I get a real loud noise/sound from what I suppose is the under the hood brake system. In my old truck driving days, I would have called it a power steering/power brake system whine. I would frequently determine that the system might be low on fluid or a problem with the pump - but this happens without the engine running and thus no pump running.

So how about it senior members - got any insights?

Thanks again.

What you hear is a normal occurrence for the conditions you have stated.

Without more info than "loud noise" I suspect it may be the ABS system.

It is the brake power assist. Without air brakes and stopping 24,000 pounds, you need some help beyond just the normal vacuum assist like you have on a car. You will also notice that the same thing happens when the engine is running and you put a lot of force on the brake pedal.

This is a normal sound of the power assist brakes on the Ford Chassis.

This is a Safety thing for the brakes - if you are driving down the highway & your engine quits, you will no longer have power brakes because the engine is no longer producing vacuum. The noise you hear with the key off is an electric motor that will give power brakes without the engine running.

these RV's do not use vacuum assisted braking, they are called a hydroboost or hydromax braking system, which is powered by the powersteering pump system. Click image for larger version

I believe it's powered by the power steering pump while the engine is running... But when hydraulic pressure is lost or not available it goes to the backup electric pump.. That is what you hear....
