Propane leak

Just returned from a quick fishing trip in Lake Erie. Camped overnight, and I turned the furnace on as the temps were dropping to 60F. Not sure if it is related, but upon return (4 hour drive), I heard a loud hissing sound coming from the coach. Walked around and opened the propane hatch. Low and behold, propane was leaking from the white plastic box, that does not appear to be easily removed. This box is just to the right of the shut off valve, which is below the fill spigot. Lost about 3/4 of a tank of propane.

Any ideas before I take it in to the dealer? Just want to avoid the coach being tied up for an easy fix.

That is the propane regulator that was leaking.


The white cover is only held on with plastic wire ties. Anyway mine is that way.

The only idea is that it was over filled beyond the temp mark on the gauge which is actually 3/4 full mark. This all depends on where you were when it was filled, temperature and altitude.
It may have just been too much pressure in the tank and expanded and blew out the weakest point. This is just a non-educated guess my friend.

I don't have a Georgetown I have a 2014 Berkshire but my propane regulator also started leaking and cost me an entire tank of propane. And that's back when propane spiked in the Midwest and it was $5 per gallon, yikes! I think this is a well known problem with FR.

My regulator blew on the way to Phoenix but just lost a little propane, heard it leaking when setting up for camp. Lucky me there was an onsite propane person who had new regulators and replaced it for me. He showed me the old regulator and the new regulator. What a difference in quality. By the way the old one split in half when removing.

Check your connections.
We lost our 1st tank because of a finger tight connection from the factory.

When we did a test at the dealership no leak, then I shook the hose and out came the white cloud.
Dealer was not happy, he said they always do the leak test 2 times and he would mention this type of leak to his techs.

As a follow up, I removed the plastic cover and can see clearly where the regulator failed. Seems like a pretty easy replacement. I reached out to Forest River about them sending me replacement part, but after this failure and the fact that many other have has similar issues, I am not sure I want the same low quality part. Can someone post a link to the double regulator alternative replacement part that I can order? See attached picture.

Regulators are inexpensive and easily replaced in a few minutes. I'm confused. Why would you want a double regulator?

The only regulators I am familiar with is on a gas grill. Those are a single disc regulator. From the photo I posted, there are 2 discs, in series, hence my phrase "double regulator." Admittedly, I am a newbie, and wanted to get other people's input on the part they used as a replacement rather than the stock FR replacement.

I had a regulator fail also. Was leaking on the first regulator blowing out the vent. From my understanding the code now requires the duel regulators for rvs. From what I've read the first regulator reduces the tank pressure to a certain point then the second regulator reduces pressure further to the low pressure of around 11 lbs I think that goes to your appliances. The duel regulator is supposed to be a safety improvement and from what I've read allows for more constant flow for large draws from say two furnaces cycling together. I ordered a replacement regulator from camping world off their web site. It was slightly larger than the original but fit fine. I think it was around thirty or thirty five dollars delivered to my door.

I was told that because the LP tank is on its side and has the potential to pass liquid a double regulator is required by law. My original regulator also started leaking last winter in Florida and I had a heck of a time finding a double.

I'm on my 3rd propane regulator on my 2013 XL, I now carry a new spare with me when I travel! First 2 were leaking - don't know why, they look cheap, feel cheap, taste cheap. But it's easy to change, just get us some thread paste that's compatible with propane/natural gas! ( I got the paste at lowes, got the new regulator at an Rv dealer )

It's a 2 stage regulator, Combines both a high pressure first stage and a low pressure second stage regulator into a single unit. Ideally designed for RV applications, these regulators ensure a smooth and continuous flow of gas to all appliances.
That's what the book says. Most propane suppliers have them, $50 to $80 for a good one.
