I have a similar setup that you do, but I do not have the surveyors tripod. I could not find one that would work with the 2"+ shaft. Where did you get your tripod at?

Best $150 I have ever spent. That thing is quick to point and holds the dish so well in high winds, you would think the "Old Coot" himself built it!

We went with the Trav'ler SK-1000. One touch of a button and the satellite dish does its thing. Ours is for Dish but I know they make a DirectTV version. Downside is the Trav'ler is expensive, but for us (as full-timers), we use it enough to justify it. Here's a link on my installation if you are interested.

Portables definitely give more flexiblility, some places it makes no difference what type you have due to the extent of the tree coverage. All depends on what you want, we can watch TV as we travel, or I should say, everyone but me can watch TV as we travel. Portable doesn't give you this ability unless you stop and set it up.
That's a great idea! We have direct tv but somehow the idea slipped right by me to record my local sports team and I can still watch them with only a few seconds delay while at the campground! Thanks
