Screws sticking rough dash

2018 31L5. Three screw ends started sticking through dash padding near the windshield. I opened the hood to see what that was all about. There are three 2-2 1/2inch what looks like Sheetrock screws in there screwed about half way in. Don’t seem to be doing anything. Screwed them out far enough to keep them from sticking through padding. Maybe used to hold something in place during assembly? Any ideas?

If they were like mine, the screws were used to hold down the plywood dash to the front fiberglass cap. It didn't hold and the dash lifts up during our drives on the highway. I will be putting screws in from the bottom to hold the plywood dash down. Others have had this problem.

These are in from the bottom. The threaded end poked through the dash. I did back them out but didn’t take them all the way out. I just don’t know why they used such a long screw. Why not use one the right length?

The real answer......they ran out of the right length screws at that moment on the assembly line.

You’re probably right. Looking at some of the other things in there I really think they don’t care about quality. But we’re taking it one problem at a time and getting it straightened out.

You are absolutely correct.

I recently removed a cabinet and dining seat. There were three inch screws used! I hope none of them damaged anything below the floor!

It's called jury rigged. The installation inspectors on these rigs is an individual that has been appointed as the inspector for their area (team leader) of responsibility. The problem is that he was on the production line earlier and passes anything that he deems acceptable to his past experiences. Some of the inspections are "self inspection" related and we all know how that works out. The dash cover install might even have been what the inspector told the installer to do.

Coincidence, saw this yesterday for the first time on my rig, have had it for 2 yrs. While driving I notice that the front of my dash seem to be rising by the windshield. Thought it was my imagination. Now I know why.
