Surge Protectors
Greetings Rv buddies! Looking to finally get a portable surge protector before the season hits. I know everyone swears by the Surge Guard 120/240V 50A model. On average I see it going for around $349.99. However, Tweety's has Progressive Industries model 55-2757/N19-0447, 120V 50A RV Surge Protector for $99.99! I'm not a mechanical genius (or any other kind for that matter!), but the only difference I can tell is the SG is 1750 joules of protection vs.1650 for the PI model, plus it doesn't look as nice. Has anyone used the PI surge protector?

I was just told in another thread that this comparison chart has some errors in it. I could verify that the one error that was reported was itself in error, and the chart was correct on that issue.
At any rate, this might help you in making a decision.

My impression is that everyone swears by the Progressive Industries units (lifetime warranty and Made In USA).
You need to compare apples to apples. Progressive Industries makes good surge protectors, but you're comparing their "spike protector" with the other companies surge protector.

BTW, the model numbers you quoted are Tweety's numbers. That's the PI SSP-50. Look at the EMS units for more protection.

Not to drag this out, but the Part Numbers that I listed are the Progressive Industries numbers for their Surge Protectors.

Sorry. There are two active Surge Protector Threads going on, and that comment was in reference to the other Thread.

RodeoGeorge, Thanks for the link and straightening me out on the surge protector vs. spike. Looks like I'll order the PI model and at $257 seems a pretty good price.

I bought the 50amp Progressive hard wired to coach version at the Quartzite rv show for out the door $305. I installed it myself and found it simple yet tricky to slip the ends of the copper wires into place and fit in the current meters. Works OK.

All the models (well the most popular) are in the comparison chart. The 30A are listed first, and the 50A are listed further down the list.
I used the chart to decide, but found the best price (actually another forum member found the price) at the company in the link.

So not meaning to go off topic but how necessary are surge protectors? We come form the tow hauler area and this is our first motorhome. Folks at all the stores say we absolutely want one and should get one. Thoughts?

Surge Protectors are like insurance. When you need it, you need it, and it can save you a lot of money on peripheral failures like Microwave, TV, Converter, etc.
I have not had one in any past RV that I've owned, but I've always checked any AC source before connecting. At Rodeo Grounds, that's a must. And I always have a voltage monitor plugged in to check for low voltage.
Now, the PI EMS-HW50C can take over that task, and also provide surge protection.

These units provide more than just surge protection. My PI EMS HW30 kicked the power out to our trailer a few times last summer when the CG power dropped below the threshold. It also hold power off to the trailer for up to 3 minutes when you plug in to check to ensure good power and also prevent arcing in the plug if you forget to have the main breakers off whne plugging in. The remote monitor is nice to so you can see the CG voltage and you amp draw at any time. I have mine mounted right above the Forest Rvier control panel for the lights and slides etc.

Just think what it would cost to replace all your onboard electronics - TV, stereo, fridge, furnace, AC unit, water heater, microwave, etc. Cheap insurance IMHO.
