X2 - we were REALLY interested in a Renegade as a TOAD. Guess what? It is NOT flat towable either!

Kenny must be covered in mud and grease with all the driveshafts he removes.

I think if I wanted the vehicle that bad I'd be just getting a trailer if it could not be flat towed or dollied... I've changed the joints in my drive shafts a few times on my Jeep and it was a pain in the butt.. Definitely not going to be going and doing that while on vacation!

I agree, I have always looked to the Jeep as the best all around toad.. Look cool, fun to drive, gives you 4x4 or AWD if needed... Sure they are not as cheap as driving a smaller car but man are they fun to drop the top!

It's not that bad. It's four bolts.
Make a j hanger and hang the driveshaft.

I'm not saying it's a great option...
But, if flat tow wasn't possible, it would be better than a trailer.

I have no dog in this fight, but I actually know a guy who owns a motorhome and flat tows his Toyota FJ. He DOES disconnect the drive shaft every time and says that it isn't a big deal. They're a fulltime family and move often.

Unrelated but related.. In a parallel thread here about whether to even have a TOAD.. Someone brought up the point of being able to back up with a trailer and a dolly. I have always heard that you cannot back up with a flat tow set up (I'm sure an expert will tell me why) but you can with a trailer. I do not see why you could not with a dolly either, though I never had one. I do not know about you but I know I've ended up in a smaller than expected spots while fueling and not being able to back up could stink...

I have removed many driveshafts. It isn't that big a deal but I would not want to do the job every time we moved. Sometimes it's raining and cold. I complain about just hooking up the toad. There are so many cars and trucks that are so easy to tow it's just bad advice to suggest anyone do this. I know a couple of people with the DS disconnects and they work ok. Still not the preferred way to do it.
On my Lincoln MKX I hook it up and put it in neutral and off we go. I even traded my Wrangler for it as we need more room and a better ride. The MKX is as easy as the Wrangler was.

I will agree with you..
I would NOT want to remove the thing every time, even with a quick connect. I do not know if it is bad advise to say it can be done through, lets face it, maybe the person really wants to tow their FJ Cruiser, who knows. In the end it is still just an option, up to the OP to decide how they proceed.

My 2013 Wrangler can NOT be towed using a dolly. Jeep is very clear on that point. With my Wrangler it must be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground, or all 4 wheels up on a trailer or flatbed. The problem seems to be that even if the transfer case is in neutral, there is still a difference in hydrostatic fluid pressure caused by one set of wheels turning and one set fixed on the dolly. This will cause transmission damage.

Most people use a tow dolly with a front wheel drive car, not a 4 wheel drive. One of the benefits of many Jeep models is their ability to tow wheels down behind a motorhome, which most of us agree is much easier than using a dolly.

Check your Jeep owner's manual for a section called "recreational towing".
x2 We flat tow my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Wouldn't have it any other way...

Our Jeep Wrangled has been towed with a dolly since 2004 without removing the drive shaft and never had a problem.

It's all preference I guess.

Due to disruptive and off-topic posts, that have been deleted, the site team is closing this thread for forum harmony sake. We hope the OP has had their question answered sufficiently to their satisfaction.
