Towing jeep liberty

I'm looking at buying a tow dolly to tow our vehicles behind 2014 Georgetown XL 377. I like the fact that I can tow any vehicle I choose. My question is my wife has a 2007 jeep Liberty, which the motorhome mag. towing guide says can be flat towed, does that mean it can also be dolly towed? It might be a dumb question but I'm new to motorhomes and towing. I will most likely be buying something lighter this summer but would like to use the jeep in the mean time. My car is front wheel drive but weighs more than jeep.

WE have been flat towing our 2007 Liberty for the last 15,000 miles and think it is an ideal tow in our mind. It is 4wd, auto xmission. Transmission in Park, Transfer case in Netural, and Key in steering unlock position. Takes less than a minute. Ready to go. In flat towing any vehicle you can NOT backup. I can't think of any reason I would choose to dolly a flat towable vehicle.

Cost would be one reason...if you want to tow a different vehicle need a different plate. I've been considering both and going with a dolly as it's cheaper and can accommodate different vehicles.

Yes, probably takes a bit longer and you have to store it, but if physically able and don't do it all that much seems a good choice.

Only thing I think scares me on 4 down is if I changed vehicles you have to get another 4 down capable vehicle and then buy a new plate.

We have been flat towing our Liberty for 4 years and it is the only way to go.. I can be hitched and ready to roll in 4-5 minutes tops.. Easypeezy.. Wont tow any other way.. In fact we have a second liberty incase the first one cant make the trip for some reason

Please check your Jeep owner's manual.

My 2013 Wrangler can NOT be towed using a dolly. Jeep is very clear on that point. With my Wrangler it must be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground, or all 4 wheels up on a trailer or flatbed. The problem seems to be that even if the transfer case is in neutral, there is still a difference in hydrostatic fluid pressure caused by one set of wheels turning and one set fixed on the dolly. This will cause transmission damage.

Most people use a tow dolly with a front wheel drive car, not a 4 wheel drive. One of the benefits of many Jeep models is their ability to tow wheels down behind a motorhome, which most of us agree is much easier than using a dolly.

Check your Jeep owner's manual for a section called "recreational towing".

I am not aware of any 4x4 Jeep product that is suitable for dolly towing. Not sure about the 2 wheel drive versions (never thought I would see a 2wd Jeep either!)

Hook the Jeep up to a Blue Ox/Roadmaster/whatever tow bar.
Plug in lights and aux brake system.
Takes 5 mins.

What am I missing here?

Different strokes for different folks but why would anyone want to have to remove and reinstall their drive shaft each time the tow. Would get old real fast on a cross country trip. Give me my four down Jeep wrangler any day.

I have used a tow dolly for a couple of years then went to towing 4 down and would never think about going back to a dolly. Hooking up in the rain a few times cured me of the dolly.

Why would you not flat tow a Jeep? They are the easiest vehicle to flat tow no need for a p.i.t.a. dolly or crawling under.

If the vehicle allows it, flat towing is the way to go. Removing a drive shaft in perfect conditions on a raised vehicle with a creeper is no big deal, but how often do those conditions exist? Not only that, but you also have to put it back in to use it. -Glenn

First time Liberty propshaft removal is a lot of trouble as the pinion flange bolts are installed with locktite from factory. Also, Liberty is touchy about propshaft balance. I would also want to plug the transfer case output to keep road dirt and water from getting into the case and need to check transfer case lube level after reinstalling the shaft.

Your Liberty is a great vehicle to flat tow as almost everyone has said. Do not put it on a dolly. Removing the drive shaft is one of the worst ideas ever. The whole idea of flat towing is the ease of use. Why make it complicated? Please take advice on forums like all advice. Check it out for yourself. As a rule with exceptions 4 wheel drive can not be Dolly towed. They must have a transfer case that can be put in neutral. All wheel drive can be FT but check the owners manual.
A Jeep Liberty is only around 3300 lbs. for a 4 seater with fold down seats it's a great toad.

I wouldn't do it if it was your dedicated tow...

But occasionally.. Sure.

Say you had two different vehicles.

One single dolly, could be used on both.


Like in my driveway, I have the lifted jeep and a Jetta.
I would usually tow the Jetta, unless I was going somewhere I wanted to off road with the jeep.
