.05 discount at Pilot/ Flying J with my Good Sam/PFJ card. I like the RV lanes but also use them with the car/truck when not RVing. I have found on our travels that, with the discount, PFJ usually have the best price for interstate travel. At home it's BJ's, Sams Club or Cosco.

Only have one complaint at a particular Flying J where cars and pick up trucks fill up the RV/Bus spots, leaving empty car spaces 40 ft from where they are parked and RV's and buses have to park illegally.

I have used Pilot, Loves and flying J in the past, but, I usually go to whatever is there when I need gas. When I used to have my big 5th wheel and diesel one ton, I tried to go to Pilot a lot. I find that if the gas station has the pumps running with the road, I usually do not have a problem. But, my rig is only a truck and 28 footer.

I'm a regular gas station guy. I find the truck stops to busy both at the gas lines, 35ft. gasser with tow, and in the store. When we get off an exit for fuel most have signs which way to turn for restaurants, lodging and fuel. As you get closer to the intersection often there will be signs turn left for Flying J's or Pilot or turn right for Shell or Mobil etc.. Never really have had a problem traveling up and down the east coast. As far as overnighting at a Flying J or truck stop in general, never would do that, again busy and noisy.

Good Sam Diesel

The discount on diesel at Flying J and Pilot with Good Sam is $.08 per gallon.

I use all three of fj, loves and pilot. RV lanes usually have much faster pumps than car lanes. Sure hate the slow pumps when the tank is almost empty.

A Good Sam card can be scanned at Flying J and Pilot for a discount.
Some Flying J have RV Islands to dump sewer, fill tanks, fill tires and get propane.
The stores have a directory that shows the locations of stations with RV islands, not all do. We pull a pickup truck so have to be careful where we get gas or we can get in trouble if there is not not enough room to turn around.
We have a good sam GPS that shows what stations are at an exit and we will use google earth to look at a station from above before we take an exit, it has worked well.

For me, the convenience I get by fueling up my diesel in the truck lanes is well worth paying a bit more.

Going to Vegas I was using the Loves, Flying J and like and since I have a Good Sam Card that got me a few cent off I didn't have a problem and I have a 35" 5th wheel.

Truck stops

I avoid truck stops because in my area they are usually a lot higher. Having a 48 gallon fuel tank helps avoid a lot of stops. And our dually and 41 foot fifth wheel have been relatively easy to get in and out of most fuel stops. I use a card that pays 2% back into my retirement account and with diesel prices currently at 2.49 that’s about a nickel per gallon. And if I paid for my WalMart gift card with that credit card...it’s another 3 cents off.

I also skip the truck stops...20+ cents a gallon higher in Florida for diesel. I have a 45 gallon auxiliary tank/tool box installed. One of the best extras I have purchased. Gives me a total of over 80 gallons of diesel. Can travel several days without worrying about refueling. When I stop for the night/destination I can head to a Wally world or gas station for the lower prices.

Truck stops

Most truckers could care less about fuel cost. They are company drivers with a company credit card. Or they are independents who are allowed to add a fuel surcharge to their cost of service.

Us little RV'ers pay out of our pocket so, to me anyway, fuel cost is important. I have no issue with getting a mile or so away from the interstate interchange to save $0.10 or more per gallon of diesel. I can always find a station with lots of overhead clearance and space around the fuel island. No truck stops for me, thanks.

That's why I drive a max of 350 miles and then park for the night. I can go get fuel without my trailer and get it a lot cheaper.

Even going cross country in the minivan we use Loves/Flying J/Pilot. Traveling with my 85 y.o father, me, DW, and three girls, we appreciate the cleanliness, convenience, and ease of access of these three, versus the typical nasty convenience store. We want gas, snacks/food, and restrooms all in one stop. Texas/Louisiana/Wyoming/Idaho/S. Dakota gas prices seemed competitive.

We don't care for the Buc-ees. Too big to be convenient (i.e long walk to the WC for my father), too busy, and full of junk we're not interested in.

YMMV, and all that...

I am picky about the "average" gas station and breathe a sigh of relief when I see a truck stop-like fuel stop with all that glorious space to move around, park, and generally conduct our business. The only regret I have with my truck is the 26 gallon tank. I honestly didn't think it would be that big of a deal but in hindsight it is.

A friend of mine bought a used GMC HD 2500 with the auxiliary tank. He said he did not want/or need it, so I bought it off of him. His GMC only had a 20 gallon tank and he gets 10 MPG. So, he was getting fuel quite often. After his 2nd or 3rd trip he went and bought another auxiliary tank and put in it. Told him so... Those tanks do come in handy.

I spent a year towing my 36' camper with a gas truck and finding fuel was the biggest PITA. Sure, there was gas everywhere but locating stations I could navigate through was an enormous time suck. I remember once having to try 5 consecutive exits before finding a suitable station. Knowing now that easily accessible fuel is available at ANY truck stop is worth it's weight in gold to me.

I may not have the biggest rig, however, being about 55 feet with my wife's Kia on our dolly, getting fuel off the highway has never posed the problem some seem to experience. And, I can't back up like those with tow behinds so that adds a dimension to boot.
