The KW1 is propitiatory to the FR1 housing.
The KW1 elements are expensive and there have been many posts that for the price of the elements, people have replaced the entire filter assembly with something that uses much less expensive and more widely available components.

Get something similar to this, cheap and it uses standard 10 inch filters less than $7 each. My GT came with this type.

As bubbles mentions....and they are readily available from Menards, Lowes, Home Depot, as well as Amazon, and they all carry a choice of filter inserts to go with them, plus they don't have the history of leaks like the proprietary ones!!

Hello Bubbles,

Do you have the model number of the filter housing that you used/direct replacement of the original housing? Does this housing come in a 1/2" or 3/4" pipe thread?

My 2012 GT came with this (similar) type and not the KW1 filter type. I'm not sure of thread but if you can pull yours take it to HD/Lowes etc..

The OP indicated in post # 1 they were looking for replacement elements somewhere OTHER than the internet.

Good luck with that! I have checked Lowes, Home Depot, ACE Hardware, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and some local places. Nobody has a "KW1" filter. The only place it shows up is at

WaterPur Filters

For one who is capable of changing out these single-source filter housings, is there any GOOD reason to not pull it off and replace it with a filter that has widely available replacement cartridges?

I've done LOTS of mods to my boat, and am embarking on improving my TT now.

I'll start a new thread to gather recommended housings so as to not derail the OP's thread.

Yes they are tough to get locally but they are available other places than waterpur.com.

Here's a Google search that found them at many R/V stores, eBay & Amazon.

I'm gonna guess you come from "up north" due to your login name!

Another option is to go ahead and get one of the aforementioned "whole house" filter housings and don't install it in your rig.
The reason is you still have to drain it and you don't want antifreeze filling it when you winterize.

Many of us trailer and/or coach owners have removed the onboard filter housing and installed hose fittings to the housing. I/we then use the filter inline with the city water hose either when on city water or when filling the fresh water holding tank. This means you can drain the filter each time you are done with it and not worry about that item getting frozen and cracked.

Happy Trails!

This is the same one I saw at menards and plan to switch to it come spring time when the trailer comes out of storage. Then there are many more choices of filters to go with it, and at reasonable prices.

I am thinking I will change the whole thing this coming spring..Or maybe just use the Camco on hose filter and just not put a filter in this one.

Thats exactly what I did this past summer. When I de-winterize in spring I'll remove the canister entirely and install a bypass fitting.

Camco hose filter ~ $18 every year.
Whole house filter with hose fittings ~ $25 incl fittings and one filter.
Next year replace cartridge for ~ $7 and the year after etc....
I've been using my whole house filter on a hose fitting for 10 years so
I've saved about $100.
