Water heater access

The bypass valve in the water heater compartment on my 2011 337DS is leaking and needs to be replaced. The only access I can find is the hand hole in the bottom of the casing----which is OK to operate the valves but not big enough to work on the pipes.
My thoughts are to remove the casing on the w/h cover (4 screws) and then remove the surrounding side panel on the coach.
Is this the way to go, has anyone had the side panel off and how is it held on to the coach frame???
