Water heater not working on propane

Well water heater will not lite. I do not hear the clicking of the starter. I know it works on electric. Have no idea where to start looking. Thanks for any advice.

Are you sure you are turning on the gas side of the hw heater ?
if you don't hear the clicking
1) not turning on the right switch
2) the reset button on hw heater needs reset
3) the circuit breaker or fuse is tripped or blown .

where are you turning it on at ?
I dont want to make it sound what your doing but just checking !

Here's something I learned the hard way.
If you have heated the water by electric and then switch to gas it will do nothing since the water is already heated. You must either use the hot water or wait until it cools down before the gas will light.

If the water in the tank is cool, does the red light come on when you turn the gas side on? If not it could be a faulty switch.

Well I turned on the switch inside the motorhome on the control board. The water also was not heated at all and also pushed the reset and did not feel like the did anything

#1 Check that the electric switch on the water heater is turned off. Ours came with a clip that locked it in propane setting and had to be removed and switched to allow it to run on electric.
#2 Check that the monitor is on providing propane to the unit. Usually found at floor level by steps, is brown with big DETECTION on it.
#3 Try starting heater with wall switch again....should work.

Well thanks for all the replies. Well I found the problem, and it's an embarrassing find. I originally check all fuses and after checking them again found that is what it was, what is even worse that was the solution to another problem I have been attempting to fix, the floor lights and out side lights are also on that fuse with the water heater.

A photo of the outside panel under the fold down door would help identify your unit.

This is a photo of a Suburban water heater. The little rocker switch is the shore power AC heating element.

The "propane" switch is inside somewhere and has a red light next to it.
Here are the manuals for the most common ones.

I figured out I had an electric/gas water heater when I found a 15 AMP breaker in the breaker box labeled "water heater".

Do you have the manual that came with your water heater?

I couldn't find the switch on mine either until I got right down on it with a small flashlight. The switch was completely hidden behind a small pipe in the lower left hand area. I camped with this unit for 2 years thinking I had a gas only water heater before I made the discovery. You may want to give another look.

My 2011 Lacrosse has an Atwood WH and does NOT have a switch outside on the heater itself. It also does not have an anode rod. I have a switch panel in the TT with an electric and gas switch with a red light between them (wish I had a photo handy for you). The red light only comes on when there is NO propane present at the WH.

My 2009 Wildwood had a Surburban WH and DID have the external switch. And it did have an anode rod. The inside switch panel only had 1 propane switch and the red light.

Both had a breaker in the converter panel also.

Hope this helps on the difference between the two makes of WH (at least the newer models, older models of each may be different altogether).

Thanks for this ... Found my switch today, and as described locked in off (propane) position.
