Weight station Pull Overs
Is it mandatory to pull in weigh stations as a RV? I seen several weight stations that say pull in if lights are on but dont know if a Class A has to

Would you be willing to give them a blank, signed check? Don't ask for it. If they check your rig, they will find something wrong. Go to a truck stop and use the scales.

I would not advise that idea.
Likely you would invite more problems than you would like to have.
Many handle serous truck traffic and have little time for non pros.
If you need a weight go to a public CAT scale or use a state scale when they are closed if state law allows (most do not care).

Maryland law requires all vehicles over the posted weight to stop. That being said, I always get the green light before hitting the scales.

I didn't plan on it, but was curious. Now you have me more curious...
Why "WILL" they find something wrong? 99+% of the trucks that go through have no problems and THEY ARE being checked for legality. If I do get weighed, the DOT guy has no other authority to check my rig, or search it etc. You sound a little paranoid.....
I had a Freightliner with a 14ft RV Cab and 53 foot double decker Featherlite trailer that I used to haul our race cars from shop to track and back. While I was "not for hire" per se', I got stopped in NC and Ohio by troopers who insisted I had to go through the scales. (nicely enough). So I did. Without a DOT number etc, the scale guys told the troopers they were crazy and they just passed me through both times.. Again nice enough.. So, I just wonder why you think they are going to get me for something. I am figuring they get a puzzled look and weigh me or... tell me to get the hell off their scales...
I think now that I am going to try it. I will let you know.

Go for it. I drive a semi 5 days a week. They have badges and guns and will do whatever they want, when they want. You are just asking for it.

Different states have different rules . I never stop for weigh stations but I must stop for agriculture stations in Florida because my pick up has a large topper with no windows , Ag officer gave me two warnings , sez the next one will cost me 160 bucks !

I have found that when many of the scales are closed, they are still operational. The proceed light is green and you can simply weigh yourself.

In Oregon the state scales are left on 24/7. If the station is closed you can pull in and weigh yourself. Good information to have.

Totally agree. Stay out of the weight stations. CAT scales at truck stops will gladly weigh you and it's a good excuse to get out and take a break. We've even parked with the big boys, ate a sandwich and taken a knap before moving on. You will have to pay app. $10, but well worth it.

Here is where you can check.
Weigh Stations | AAA/CAA Digest of Motor Laws
Some say commercial vehicles, some say passenger or specialty vehicles (RV's) over 10,000gvw towing a trailer (toad) must stop. There doesn't seem to be an consistency between states. Some states bring everyone in for a safety inspection, in that case they check everything including the skid marks in your shorts.
I think for the most part they really aren't after RV's for weight although some could use a safety inspection, especially for tires and brakes. They do watch for suspicious RV's that may be transporting drugs.

Just read this thread. How about a 42' bus with a toad. Seems like BooBoo link show you only need to stop if commercial. Suggesting even a big Class A does not need to stop. ??
