I use magnesium.
Wears faster than aluminum but my guess is that is what you want it to do.
They last between 1 and 2 seasons.

So I guess they wear much faster if you are full timing... How do I know when it is time to replace?

Using my Georgetown at least 4 months a year I replace every year.
I buy online 4 at a time so I always have them available.
Magnesium is better as a sacrificial anode than aluminum but if you are watching your dollars aluminum will still do the trick with no side effects.
