Window Envy

As I sit in RV parks it often happens that a much more expensive coach parks next to me. A while ago I was sitting at my dinette looking out at the $750,000 (used price) Marathon Prevost conversion sitting next to me and I thought to myself, "What does he have in that that I don't have?"

Well the first thing that crossed my mind is that he could see right in through my windows at me. While I'd never be able to tell if he was looking out. I figured this was something I could fix. I like some privacy and hate being on display.

So I did some reading on the various forums and decided to order two rolls of Gila Mirrored Privacy Window film and an application kit. Then I got busy rewatching the how-to video on Gila's web site and taking notes.

So far it's going well. I've gotten five windows done and I have three to go. I'm not putting any on the windows I use when driving of course. It's not a professional job but it's pretty good, and you only see the flaws if you get really close.

The first picture below shows the bunk windows, which have had the film applied and the side bedroom window which has not.

The second window shows the dinette window with the left half done and the right half not done.

The third picture was taken a little later and shows what it looks like from the inside. The windows over the dinette on the left of the picture have both been coated. The windows over the couch have not.

Nice looking job but you may have inadvertently done something that is not permitted by law. Just out of curiosity I looked up the Washington code regarding the application of window films to motor vehicles. You might want to take a look at sections (5), (5)(a), (g) and (g)(l). I hope these regs don't apply to you but...

We have the same laws, as long as you don't do the front 2 you should not have any problems.

Is it a cling film or the thin type that is not easy to remove.

It's a residential film. So it's the thicker cling style. Only works on flat windows.

Gila makes the automotive thin type too. I've never used it though.

Wow looks good, I am planning to do the same thing. Now 1st question, does it go on the inside or the outside? If its on the inside (which im sure it is) how big of pain was it to apply with the shades & valance getting in the way? Last of all, how many rolls did it take to do the whole coach? Thanks in advance

It goes on the inside. So far I haven't had to remove any valences or shades. A few have been in the way a bit but I've been able to work around them. In addition to the trimming tool that comes in the kit I've used an exacto-knife in a few places to trim where it would have been hard to get to.

I did one window by myself and messed it up. I need to remove it and redo the thing. I have the spray and stuff to get it done. Another winter project.

I'll do mine at he local glass shop so if he job goes south I have a high school buddy who plonks the shop to help me.

I had ours done by a professional company while we were at a park in Orlando. Took the guy almost 5 hours to do all the windows on our 373, but man does it look sharp and help with the summer heat! Only thing I wish I would have had him do in addition is the window on the door. We didn't have it done since it already has the privacy glass, but at night it can look like the porthole in a submarine now! LOL

Oh yeah, it cost me about $350 for materials and labor.....

To the OP, great job. No worries about breaking laws, it's a non issue. It is a great idea. We also have a 2008 GT 350 and this mod will be on my "to do" list.

Yes, it doesn't help at night. But it's 110% better in the daytime.

Now Now children, Mommy and Daddy don't like it when the children fight.....

Thats why cops don't like back lit areas. Gives us away no matter how dark it is in front of us.
