Winter Battery Storage

So I am in the cold NE and have no access to electric for my RV for the winter storage. I have been told and read that I should run the engine and exercise the generator at least once a month which will keep the batteries charged. The other school of thought is remove the batteries and keep them on a tender inside which prohibits the exercising of the generator. What do you all do??

This exact question has been presented countless countless times.

I’ll sit on the sidelines again. 🍿🍿

You’ll get answers to do it using both methods. There’s no wrong way as long as if you’re going to run the engine and genny, make sure they get good and hot.....no favours done if you just do it measured in minutes.

For future reference......look near the top of the page and you’ll see the “Search” box for information. Just use the broadest words or you won’t get a match.

Snarky replies aside I would pull the batteries and keep them at home where you can charge them. If your Generator runs on propane then change the oil and call it good for the winter. If it runs on Gas then follow the directions for winter storage from the manufacturer.

Not sure I read any 'snarky' replies but new forum members do need to learn how forums work. Suggesting someone search the forum before posting isn't snarky.

With that said.... if the OP plans to do the monthly exercise of the generator and the coach... let the battery(ies) right where they are.

If you don't believe you can adhere to that schedule, then take them out if you feel more comfortable... or simply disconnect them and let them right there.

A fully charged battery will last months without damage, without freezing or without harm if disconnected as will the generator and engine without running.

I have both removed my batteries and taken them home and kept them on a tender in the basement all winter, and left them in the rig and every few weeks go out and run the engine and genny. Either way works. I now keep the rig home in the driveway with it plugged in, best yet!
