A Cheaper Place To Winter

Hi All

I have been spending my winters in the "Valley" in Texas. That is the area of the Rio Grande Valley which borders Mexico. Runs from Brownsville through to Mission area roughly. A great place to stay and much cheaper than Florida (more than half price) and Arizona (1/3 less). Great parks and people. Weather comparable to south Florida.

I stay in Donna Texas at Bit-O-Heaven RV Park. Been there for 4 years. Was going to do a month mid March to mid April in Florida to check it out in 2009-2010 season thinking of switching for a year. Lasted 2 weeks and went to Georgia. Texas in my opinion a better deal. I highly recommend you look at the parks via the web. You may be surprised.

Have a great winter in the south. I leave next Friday for 6 months.

Visited friends at Bit of Heaven, Wally and Carolyn. We normally stay at Llano Grande, but, not this year, getting my shoulder replaced next month

We are leaving in a few days and have not made any reservations this year. We like Alamo Palms but are going to look for a park with larger sites. We like AP in every way but the site size.

This is my first time going south for the winter and a lot of questions.When going to Texas, do you need to reserve ahead of time? I worry about reserving at a campground and find out it's not what like or the area is blah. I think the better places would be booked up, but is there still many good places we could drive into and stay awhile? DW just had shoulder surgery and is in rehab for now. We can't leave till she reaches a certain level of usage. So planning a departure date is impossible. Any thoughts on a good plan?

In the valley February is the most crowded. But even then you will find a place. In the last number of years there have only been a very few parks with no sites available.

The lower Rio Grande Valley is one of the least costly places in the entire US. I travel there often as do more then 100,000 Winter Texans. There are many good RV parks there and you should be able to find one without reservations. Cheep meds and dentists across the border in Mexico. Good Luck

From Chicago we have stayed in both Texas and Arizona. I could not find a economical RV Park in south Florida. I know their there, but still.... Lone Star, Texas was 275 plus elect. (great place just to far north), Palacios, Texas was 350 w/elect,cable,wifi. Arizona North Phoenix RV Campground was 325 + elect. I always validate/reserve or at least have a backup plan/RV park. Love being a snowbird!!!

My wife always wanted to do the Sedona, Arizona area, but maybe this could be a good alternative or add on to fro one area to the other. Anything is better than -15C and shovelling.
