did you mean 540 (NOT 640) to 40 then on 25 to Lafontaine Tunnel which joins 20 on south side of river?? We went to PEI thru Montreal mid day last summer and it was nightmare due to road construction and traffic. I think your way is better.

you are correct, its 540 north for maybe 10 k to hwy 40

hwy 20 becomes a major city road with traffic lights just east of 540

two years ago the elevated section of hwy 40 was closed for construction so we were on surface streets underneath and around it, but last year it was clear and fast moving at 2am

montreal in daylight hours is to be avoided at any cost, bumper to bumper traffic just like toronto but moving at 110+ and drivers are maniacs, road rage episodes are very common. at 1-3 am you'll share the very narrow 3 lane elevated hwy with a few scattered trucks

you can also take hwy 40 out of montreal on the north side of the st lawrence river, nice highway, goes through trois riviere and and on to quebec city. you can cross the river at trois riviere or quebec city back to hwy 20

the worst section for driving to atlantic canada is riviere du loup to the new brunswick border although the highway is being rebuilt to 4 lane, slowly!!

quebec city is well worth a stop for a couple of days

the bridge and ferry to pei are a neat trip. you pay nothing to get to pei no matter which you use(ferry or bridge) so this year we will take the ferry to the island for free and the bridge back, paying the toll. the bridge is much cheaper, around 60 bucks for our van/trailer if i remember correctly but avoid a windy day!!

We are actually booked in at Pike Lake mid August. Might be first time using the new camper as I am going to go have a hip replaced in about 45 mins...lol. Hope to be mobile by then! I'm only 35 so I am hoping the recovery time is shortened a bit!

Maple Ridge, BC here. Just got back from 10 days with our new 2012 Tracer 2670 BHS. Stopped in for a night at Halcyon Hot Springs then onto Calgary for 4 nights. Stayed in Okotoks at the Woodhaven campground. North to Alder Flats to visit more family for 3 nights then a beautiful drive northwest through Jasper to an overnight in Valemount at the Yellowhead campground. 7 hours back home. TT pulls really nice with the 2007 F150 5.4. Nice to be here great forum. Cheers.

Where do you camp near Trois-Rivieres? Would love to go camping there and visit friends in the area. But, it must be dog friendly, as I have several dogs.

I'm from Calgary too, and I was amazed at Jasper National Park. Even the overflow, where we spent our first night, was gorgeous. We camped at the Snaring River campground (no power or water) but we didn't mind. It was great. Buy a National Parks Pass and the firewood is all included. We have also camped around Saskatchewan too, and it is also beautiful. We stayed at the park north of Moose Jaw and toured the Tunnels in town. We have a Shamrock 21BH and I absolutely love it.

Was the overflow full? We would love to hit Jasper this year, but we didn't manage to get any reservations. Is there any chance of just showing up and getting a spot, services or not?

That's what we did last year, just showed up. First I did not want to pay so much for the other campsites, so we took our chances. We were held up a for few days in Hinton when I lost the top gears in my truck (bad luck) and the transmission had to be replaced. So on the Friday of the Sept long weekend we arrived and even the campground we chose was full, which is how we ended up the Snaring River overflow. If you get there early enough you can pick your spot, it's just a big field but the edges are nice to camp near. And the scenery that night, as the sun went down, was incredible. You can see all the mountains all the way around the campsite, even tho by then all the RV's had filled up the center of the area. The very next morning we found an empty spot inside Snaring River campground and moved. Quite a few were empty by then. There is a train track right next to the overflow but that never bothers me, couldn't see it thru the trees, just hear it. We were there the first two weeks of Sept, and it was mating season for the Elk,so please, watch carefully as you drive. One huge bull marched right across the highway in front of us. The Hot Springs was okay, we found it far too crowded and the road up the mountainside to it is full of turns and crazy drivers wanting to speed. Once we set up our base camp in the campsite, we went down to the Athabasca Glacier for the bus tour of it, and we did the boat trip on one of the lakes (fantastic scenery), and the old town site of Jasper is full of old buildings, including the train station. I'm a bit of fanatic with my photography and couldn't decide what to shoot first. The campsite is only about 12 -20 minutes east of Jasper, depending on the traffic. I would recommend the parks pass if you plan to stay for more than a few days, it now includes the historic buildings all across Canada now. We buy an annual one. Jasper is now my favourite National Park and I woud definitely go back again.

Didn't mention this, but there are great hiking trails in the area too if that's what you like. I used to hike quite a bit, till a pretty bad fall basically wrecked my knee and a ligament, but I still do shorter, gentler hikes. I decided to look around in the old hotel in Jasper and spend most of the time looking up at the ceiling and beautiful chandeliers... , and the last thing I can mention is that there IS a Tim Horton's as well. We didn't eat out anywhere as we usually prefer to do our own cooking at the campsite. We had great weather while there, altho were told by residents that all summer it had rained. In the mountains, rain can make things kinda' cold as you probably know. Other than going back to NS where I grew up, this has become my next favourite place to go.

Thanks! Yes, we love to hike and bike, and we also enjoy kayaking a bit with the kids if there is calm water available. We have an annual National Park Pass which we use as often as possible (living in Calgary has its benefits). I haven't camped in Jasper for several years, so its high time we got back there!
