Crowsnest Pass recommended route?
Planning a trip from Calgary Alberta down to the Oregon Coast (Hwy 101). I haven't travelled the pass for a good 20 years or so and even then, not in an RV.
Does anyone know the condition of the road? Are there many twisty downhill bits with wimpy guardrails between you and large bodies of water?lol
Any tips or recommendations on preferred route?

2015 - 2 great trips so far. Alberta to Oregon coast, Alberta to Shushwap in BC.

The road is fine. I went to Coeur d'Alene then Portland to highway 101.

The road is great, trailered it several times, how far west are you going? The only caution I would have is entering osoyoos from the east, quite a few switch backs and steep decent!

Hwy 3 down to the Kingsgate border then US 95 towards Spokane. Shouldn't be anywhere near Osoyoos unless I get really lost lol.

You should be ok with that route. Pretty easy route through to Creston and you're turning South before that. I recommend not towing on the #3 from Creston to Salmo. Did that once. Won't do again.

It may be a bit longer but I'd recommend Hiway 2 to Fort MacLeod then west, rather than Hiway 22.. The traffic is nuts on there, and more than one RVer has gotten a good look at their axles cuz of the wind gusts...
I'd top up the gas tank in the pass before hitting BC.. It's about 12 cents a litre higher west of the rockies..

Excellent advise from "glen1971". The highway from Calgary to Fort Macleod is divided so you can cruise the right lane. Also between Fort Macleod and the Crowsnest Pass the road has had several more passing lanes added to allow anyone behind you to get around you safely. Enjoy the trip, the Columbia river gorge stretch has many spectacular sights if you go that way.

Once you get in to ID there is a cheap gas stop at the top of the hill just before you descend into Bonners Ferry. Beyond that, try the shell gas station in Sandpoint on the opposite side of the road from Walmart. They have stand alone diesel pumps (if needed) and plenty of room for a vehicle towing a trailer. I'm planning on doing this route in August as I head down to Oregon. Like others have said, no problem going through the Crowsnest Pass. The biggest delay is likely to be at the border crossing. I usually aim to be there very early a morning which means leaving Calgary by about 3am. On the plus side of that, the road are very quiet and the wind is significantly less. If you plan to overnight and want a great place to stop try Spokane RV Resort at Deer Park, just north of Spokane. FHU, pool, cabel for about $35 per night.
