For those of you who don't know, we've had a huge flood in Calgary and the city is just today starting to dry out. Downtown is still closed and access is restricted for many folks who have been living in hotels, with friends and family, or on the charity of others. High River is a town down the highway about 1/2 hour from Calgary, and this is a shot of an RV dealer there....water is within 2 ft. of the tops of the 5th wheels.

Had to laugh today- the Calgary Stampede is 2 weeks away- we've changed the motto for this years Stampede to "Come Hell or High Water" We're a hardy bunch here in Calgary

I think it's ridiculous to be putting so much effort into making the stampede go forward... the time, effort, and money should help everyday people... not a show promoter. If they did get it all done on time, where will visitors stay? The city will have it's rooms all full of displaced residents, so it can't possibly draw the people it usually does anyways. Just my 2 cents

Hi Riders- agree with you in some respects, but sometimes I think that after the tremendous heartache this has caused, maybe the 100 thousand people displaced by the flood need a good party? I do see your point but we have the resources to help and still have the stampede. It's a world class event, and maybe we owe it to the world- you know, "the show must go on"?

I really haven't seen any evidence of anyone falling through the cracks and not getting the help they need. If that happens, I'll feel the same as you do.

They could have cancelled the rodeo but still have the entertainment. All monies raised from the concerts could go to help all the people who had their homes destroyed. It they did not have sewer back up insurance they will not be covered. You cannot purchase flood insurance in Canada. So after paying to the big companies for so many years when they need help they are not covered.

The Alberta Government has said that the damage will be covered by the province. If the scope of an incident is great enough insurance or no insurance is not an issue.

Wow! That's cool. Glad all will be well eventually.
I have to presume that the RV company will have insurance to cover their loses.

If coverage is anything like BC, then you get a percentage of the 'tax appraised' value IF it is totally destroyed and IF it was your permanent residence. No sewer backup coverage if sewage is not proved to have caused the flood. No contents covered by government. There is going to be a lot of disgruntled tax payers in Alberta in the coming months when they find out how little they are going to be entitled to.

We have. We were also told that the Icefield road from Jasper to Banff is also open. True? That may be an option for us. Obviously, we do not want to go hundreds of miles out of our way to get to the lower 48. Thanks for your reply.

Yes the Parkway is open. Highway 93 is open north and south. Highway 1, the Trans-Canada, is open one-lane each way at Canmore as well.

Took a ride down Hwy 2 past High River yesterday and although you have to slow down to 50 km passing there, all lanes are open. RCMP at hwy exits to the town.

Yes, it's going to be a long, tough recovery for those impacted by the floods. Gotta think there will be many places, such as much of High River and parts of Canmore, where folks will either want to, or be forced to relocate. I can't imagine rebuilding on a lot that's had major flooding in both 2005 & 2013.

As with many of us in the area, my heart, sweat and wallet will continue to go out to those affected.
