Large firewood & no kindling at O.P.P.

Here's my cheap solution: Purchase a pipe-fitter's hand-torch nozzle with flint striker (about $5-7) used to "sweat" pipe fittings, screw it onto the little green propane bottle you use on your portable bar-b-que and you can start most anything on fire!

In thirty years I've never gone camping without an axe. Nearly always split kindling wood ......part of the fun of campfires😀

Fiskars axe and swede saw are permanent residents of the pass through. There's always something in nature that will burn or a way to make it burn.

We camp primarily in Provincial Parks too and have always bought from the parks to help support them and to avoid transporting pests but agree that the wood has been wet and that they tend to run out at some of our favourite parks just before their fall closing dates. As retirees that's prime camping time for us. Don't laugh (too hard) but DH has done a careful study of his campfire habits and has found that it is about the same price to buy the cheapest 2x4's he can find cut them to an easy to pack length and use them for bonfires. Nice crackly fires. Very little ash left behind and easy to light as they are dry. A few donated pallets has him over the moon about free fires. No invasive species involved ��

I keep some of the lint from dryer...also empty toilet tissue rolls...stuff lint into the rolls...I store in gallon size ziplock bags and keep in storage compartment of RV.

We always check with the campground about the firewood issue. Some places don't sell it and encourage you to bring your own so people don't damage the trees. I think it really depends on where you are going. Most of our camping is local or in a neighboring state and none of them seem to have an issue with BYOW. We always have an ax or hatchet to make kindling. Ditto on the caution about using an ax. I have had several near hits and my DH has gotten himself in the leg or boot a few times over the years. We do still have all our fingers and toes though. I have tried the dryer lint thing and it doesn't work for me. We usually use commercial fire starters of some sort.

You've got that RIGHT. We live in southwest Ohio and the ash trees have been decimated - although that doesn't seem so bad when I'm on the golf course and have fewer trees to deal with!

Well now let's make sure that we know what we are talking about. The OP talked about a lack of kindling. Kindling is small wood, like about branch size. When we talk about dryer lint, vaseline-soaked cotton balls, commercial fire starter, that's not kindling. That is tinder. Tinder is any highly combustible material that you first apply fire to, to get a fire started. That in turn, is what gets your kindling burning, Once you get your kindling burning good, you can then apply your logs and such.

bought Hubby an axe to keep in the camper. last trip out we had firewood but no kindling so he took a piece of wood and used the ax to make kindling from the piece of wood. (just cut it in small slivers from the triangle ends down (split it with the axe)

My wife uses an old boy scout trick, save the old dryer lint and the wax left over from old candles . Put the lint into egg cartons, then pour the molten wax into each egg cup. When your ready to have a fire break off several of the cups add some pieces of charcoal make a tepee out of the firewood over the charcoal then light the egg cups. Myself I have 2 ways to start a fire 1st burns-a-matic tourch turn it on and let it do the business. 2nd bring one of those grass burners and a 20lb propane tank, now mind you my wife hates both my ways and grass burner is kind of like a flame thrower and not for most. Boy will it start a fire when you hit that boost button, no kindling needed. Kind of a man thing.

We just came back from 11 days at Presquille Provincial Park, wood there was great, good mix of hard and soft wood. Dry, couple pieces of birch per bag for the bark. As others have said I have a 16 yoa son who loves to swing an axe and I give him that opportuniry to learn a new skill. As I tell him cut the kindling small and watch your fingers. No problems at site 407, Trails End.
