Just heard of new suggested park rules going into effect soon for campers hiking in bear country:
  • Bring bear pepper spray
  • Bring little bells to warn bears of your approach
  • Learn the difference between black bear scat & grizzly bear scat...
Answer: Black bear scat is smaller and has berry seeds... while Grizzly bear scat is larger, smells like pepper and sometimes has little bells!

A guy I ride with used to be a bush pilot in AK. He always said those bells are really dinner bells, a surprised bear is and unsafe bear, a hungry bear is a dangerous bear ALWAYS.

Nice park. We camped there many years ago and let me tell you that you don't go to sleep till the bullfrogs say you go to sleep. The kids were a lot younger and they thought it was great when we would holler (quietly of course) shut up and the frogs did. But only for a minute or so and then start right back in croaking. Hope you had a good trip. Old Guys

Last summer in Alaska, our bush pilot had a guide leaving for a bear tour and he was equiped with a 50 cal. revolver holstered to his chest. I asked him why he didn't wear it on his waist, and he said it was so heavy he would probably tip over.... ha!

Actually, there was a study of bear attacks that tried to determine whether it was better to have pepper spray or a gun. Their conclusion was the pepper spray worked a little better b/c it covered a wider area and most folks can't hit anything with a gun in all the excitement...

Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared.

My mom gave me that as my Indian name (Runs with Scissors) when I was younger because I am always the one in a hurry to do something dangerous.

My wife says it's Dances with Dificulty
