Prince Edward Island. First big RV trip

So we've decided to go to PEI for our summer trip. Anyone know of a nice oceanfront campground with oceanfront sites?

Also, this will be our first big trip where we need to stop overnight and wondering where would be a good place to rest in Quebec.

Thirdly, not sure if we should brave Champlain bridge in Montreal to cross on the shore or drive through the city to go to 40 and cross in Quebec city or cross in Chataugay.

If you end up in Quebec City, you can camp on I'le D'Orleans. It is out of your way, but worth it if you have time.

Lots of ways to get through Montreal, more to see if you go down the Hwy 20 but I like the 40 better, less traffic I think.Just my opnion of course.

We stayed at Crystal Beach campground (a private cg) with a pull thru site next to the water. This was in mid Sept and very rainy. It would be nice mid summer. We stayed in Quebec KOA which was very busy even in bad weather. You will really enjoy PEI and the lobsters! I dont want to think about driving through Montreal (all under construction). Enjoy your trip. btw, Bay of Fundy in NB is excellent Prov park Have a great trip, we did

PEI camping

I highly recommend Twin Shores, large campground, a short walk to beach, has some open and wooded sites.

We also stayed at the Cavendish KOA. Nice campground and very near Anne of Greengables. PEI is a pretty island and the bridge to get there is neat. We also hit the Bay of Fundy in NB, Cape Breton in NS, and Ovens in NS. Ovens is really neat as you camp directly on the water.

Pei

Two SC "geechies", we traveled there last summer. What a lovely place.
It's better to go in through Pictou, on the ferry, and come out on the bridge. Have you been to Cape Breton? The most beautiful landscape in eastern North America. But leave your camper in the lower latitudes, or put racing brakes on your truck.

We have been to PEI 4 times and taken just about any route possible, Champlain Bridge is fine, the tunnel is fine as well. A couple of times we drove through Vermont-New Hampshire-Maine-New Brunswick-Nova Scotia. We drove over the Confederation Bridge to PEI and at other times have taken the ferry. (the cost is the same, free to get there, you pay on the way back). If you want to go through Nova Scotia it is well worth taken the ferry from Saint John New Brunswick to Digby N.S. (it's a 3 hour crossing) The gas money pays for the ferry and you save yourself 8 hours driving.

We don't make reservations for campgrounds but play it by ear, sometimes one is very lucky and sometimes one has to compromise for a night, not a big deal, that's why we have RVs.

In PEI we like to stay in Murray River, it's a a small campground right on the river and we day tour from there. If you prefer the ocean there are many RV parks, just google PEI tourism.

Quebec City camping

If you are self-contained, you may camp in the parking lot at the marina in downtown Quebec City. It is expensive for just a parking space, but oh so convenient to everything QC. Obviously first come, first served.

If you are going to New Brunswick as well the Oceanfront Campground in St Andrews right on the Bay , nice town as well, good to walk around in as well. We spend many nights there.

If you cross at Chatauqay is is a short drive through the town with lots of traffic lights before reaching Highway 30 then is is a direct run to Highway 20. The traffic can be busy but it is better then going through Montreal. The tunnel has a hazard restriction. I do not know if you could go through the tunnel with propane tanks. I always take the south shore when going through Quebec. Have a nice trip.

Thanks Caper, that's what I was thinking about, I went this way once but didn't pay attention to the roads for RVing but will make an other trip on it without trailer (I'll go see my dad on the south shore) and see how it looks.

fonzie, this is what I was wondering about! I've taken this road before (salabery de valleyfield ) and I remember the hydro electric stuff but don't remember it being a tunnel but now that you've share the video... it's all coming back to me now

" However, these prohibitions do not apply:

when the fuel is used for the propulsion of the vehicle and is contained in one or more tanks designed for that purpose by the vehicle manufacturer;
when the flammable liquid is used for the air conditioning of the vehicle or the load space and is contained in a tank designed for that purpose by the air conditioning manufacturer;
when the flammable liquid is intended for the operation of equipment that is permanently screwed or bolted to the vehicle whose tank capacity does not exceed 75 litres and the flammable liquid is contained in a tank designed for that purpose by the vehicle or equipment manufacturer;"

not sure how to read this
can I or can't I go through the tunnel with my 2 propane tanks off??

Cavendish KOA was nice when we were there ('09). Marco Polo was also within a mile of the KOA. The Oven's in Nova Scotia was right on the ocean, we could hear the waves crashing on the shore the whole time. You used to be able to stay overnight in the Quebec rest stops, the price was right, free!

You'll have a great time, happy camping,

BouBou, I have not gone through the tunnel with my trailer yet. I believe it is permissible if you shut off your propane tanks and are within allowable size. Also you have to follow the"Hazardous Signage", go into right lane, stop at red light and then proceed when green light for that lane. See pictures attached.

Funny, I drove there this weekend I was looking for the right lane. Seems like both lanes sorta merge into one large lane into the tunnel.

We've booked Brudennel Provincial Park in PEI, not so close to cavendish but looks like a nice park. It was recommended by some local PEI friends.
