Gas Mileage with Lexington 270

I own a 2004 Forest River Lexington 270 with a Ford 6.8L V10 engine. I would like to know how I can improve gas mileage. I am from VA and I have been cruising at 60 mph everywhere I have been with the Lexington. The best gas mileage I have gotten is 8.5 mpg and the worst is 6.5 mpg. I recently tried to cruise at 57 and mileage improved back to the 8.5 mpg. I am also a professional bowler that uses the motorhome more often than others. Other pro bowlers with RVs have told me that they get 10-12 mpg, but they also use V8 engines. I really need help with getting better gas mileage. All help is appreciated. Thank you very much.

Brother inlaw had a 2001 Allegro 33 ft with the v-10 his best ever was 7.5 mpg.

We did find on a trip to wyoming that the best mileage was at 55/60 mph.

i have found that drafting off of 18 wheelers is one of the cheapest ways to increase milage but it only really works on long hauls and may only give you a few extra miles per tank. i was unable to calculate the savings, but just fuel for thought,

RV drafting. Now I like that idea.

Found this article, about NASCAR Drafting, on the Web and replaced a few words. Thought it might add a little humor.

What is RV Drafting?
RV drafting is where you get two vehicles, usually an 18 wheeler and your RV rig together in a train. The 18 wheeler pushes through the air, your rig gets in behind and can go faster than normal, and can actually push the 18 wheeler. The train of 18 wheeler and RV rig can actually go around the country so fast, so that anyone not in this train will almost look like they are going backward. We like to use it on the Interstate Highways that limit speed. So you get alot of 18 wheelers and RV rigs set up with little downforce, all going together, pushing their limits and each other, with little air around them. There can be major crashes of 20-30 RV's at once, if just one RV loses or gets pushed out of control.


That's RV drafting. Kinda like coming home on the freeway. LOL...

Thanks to milzat & gate33 for your information on RV drafting. I will keep that in mind when I am on interstate highways.

Does anybody have any ideas to improvements that I can do to the motorhome engine itself or the body to help with fuel mileage? Thanks.
