Hi I am in the UK and just bought a Lex 283 which is 3 years old
on the gear change there is a small picture of a trailer, what is this for?

By "gear change" do you the mean the shifter? That is the common term in the U.S. for the lever that is used to change gears.
Is that picture of a trailer on a button? Or is there a button near the picture? If so, it may be the button used to tell the vehicle's computer that it needs to alter the parameters for the shift pattern. When towing, the transmission will generally shift a little later which means the RPMs of the engine would stay a little higher. This allows the vehicle to not bog down and while the engine is spinning faster, it is actually less stressful on the drive train as a whole.
If there is no button near there, perhaps it lights up when the "tow" button (located elsewhere) has been depressed.
If neither is the case, then I have no idea what it is for.

The button should be on the end of the shift lever. This is the tow/haul feature. It changes how the automatic transmission shifts. Some people use it even when not towing a vehicle because it uses the engine to help you brake. If you are using it and driving in hilly terrain, when using cruise control, it downshifts way too early and you might wind up going up the hill at 4500 rpm. When that happens, I turn off the cruise control and use the accelerator to moderate the shifting. When depressed, a little orange trailer lights up on the control panel. This can be a little disconcerting because an orange or red light on the control panel usually means you have a problem but you will get used to it.
