Hair Dryer for the Mrs.

What kind of a hair dryer do you ladies use that will not kick out the breakers on a Lexington Forest River 25.5 RV? Thank you.

I brought a traveling kind that folds down from WalMart for about $14 if I remember correctly. I like this dryer better than the one at home that cost a lot more. I haven't had any problems using it but then I camp with hookups.

Finding a hair dryer that DW would think is worth a darn that pulls less than 1 kilo-watt is high on my list of potential gifts to DW.

Very easy. Buy a toyhauler, if you don't already have one, buy a bike, then let her hop on the back and tool her around with out a helmet. If she don't smack the crap out of you on the ride, wait till she tries to comb that mess out!

Sunbeam 1500 hair dryer home/hotel model. You can find them on ebay. My wife has been using this model since one came factory eqipped with our first motorhome 10 years ago. I put one on the wall in the bathroom in our 295 GTS.

CG electric pedestals usually have a dedicated 15/20amp plug, I just run a heavy extension cord into our TT (via the slide out opening) for the DW hair dryer, also for the toaster oven and portable heater. She's happy so am I.

Hmm. 1500...

I wonder how many watts that pulls. Oh, wait... 1500 watts.

1500 watts dry camping is huge. It is also no small pull on hookups.
With Shore Power 1500 Watts equals 12.5 amps or just shy of half your available current in a 30 amp camper. Not only that, but it is typically on a 15 amp breaker. When the Ac kicks in don't be surprised if the pedestal or main breaker trips.

Off an inverter, to get 1500 watts you would need to get 1500 watts divided by 12 volts in amps from your battery (bank) or 125 amps.
A 75 amp hour battery (stock in our 5th Wheel Flagstaff) would last about 4 minutes from full to dead.

1500 watt cappuccino makers (and coffee makers) are also "out" when dry camping for the same reason.

Frank,

We can use the one she has while the genset is running or on shore power, but I would like to get her something that "works" that is more battery friendly. We won't even discuss the "curling iron."

Theoretically we could too as long as I do a pre-hair dryer AC consumption check but undoubtedly when (not if!) the CG breaker trips I'm the one who has to go out and reset it. Having this dedicated 15amp AC source eliminates that.

Regarding a battery friendly hair dryer maybe a propane-powered one? Hmmm, maybe not.

Of course it's 1500 watts on high! I can do the math! Of course you can't have the air conditioner, water heater on electric, an electric fry pan, coffee pot brewing, hair dryer all going at the same time! Da! But you can use the the hair dryer on that ciruit only. One other big pull item of your choice & everyone's happy!! Let's not be thinking too hard!
We could own a Winnebago with their power mangement system. On 30 amp service it started shuting off items as you got close to 30 amps.

Curling Iron is easy - pick up a battery operated one at a beauty supply store. Unless she insists on a *big do* it should do the job ok. You could try talking to her about getting a perm - no need for the curling iron or hair dryer but could end up looking like the family pet if the curls are too tight.

I used a 1875W hairdryer while we were plugged into 30amps. Wasn't a problem, although nothing else major was on.

However, the hairdryer was an afterthought to even be packed at all. I only brought it because the weather was very cold and I didn't want my DD or myself freezing while our hair 'air dried'.

I am a woman with the firm belief that camping means wearing hats and no make-up.
Therefore: the words 'camping' and 'curling iron' should never be used in the same sentence.

Buy your wife some nice baseball hats

Lou you held my attention for what seemed an eternity while reading how to install the Horst Miracle Probes (excellent post btw); you have bestowed on us the art of dry camping and understanding of battery power and conservation; everyone of you mods are on my to do list; I could go on, however you have never so succinctly explained something as you just did here! Bravo!!

Moo (the OP) wherever you are please come back and save us from ourselves!

oops I just peed my pants!!

We have a small hair dryer in the camper but I don't recall using it. It too is if it is cold out and I don't want mine or DGD's hair to freeze. I do use a curling iron if we are leaving the cg for anything or vacationing and so far no problem with the A/C and coffee pot on while using it.
