After many years of RVing I find myself going solo and I don't want to make a dumb mistake right out of the storage space. The original owners said I can only run the AC and nothing else if I connect to my residential house 110 power. (While loading for a trip). Can someone confirm snd give me some basics so I don't break or destroy any electronics. I would like to plugin and get the frig cold. I was not the expert when I traveled in our diesel pusher but I know I can mess up batteries by not doing things correctly. Thanks for any guidance anyone can offer. .

It depends on the amp breaker you are plunging into. I use everything in my TT while plugged into house. Sometimes in summer I have to plug into a certain socket if ac in house and camper are running. I'm sure you will get response from individuals that are really I tune to electrical. The most mine will do occasionally is trip a breaker.

Gypsily,

The major electrical appliances are"
  • Converter (battery charger) 700 watt - includes Fridge and Lights
  • Fridge 400 watts (not positive on this)
  • Half time oven 1600 watts
  • AC 1250 watts (13500 btu)
Typical outlets are 15 amp (120v * 15 = 1650 watts), some garage outlets are 20 amp (2200 watts).

A 15 amp outlet would cover the converter and fridge (700 + 400)
A 20 amp outlet could run the converter and AC (700 + 1250)

Just add up the watts on all the items and stay below the outlet limit.

Thank you NoviBill. I think I can handle what you have given here. I'm sure my question shies my lack of basics but I'm a quick learner so I hope I won't make too many mistakes. I need to find out if I gave a 20 amp accessible in the garage. That would be my preference since my home base is in Florida where hsving AC is essential.

Have you considered having a 30 amp outlet installed in your home at a convenient place for plugging in the motorhome?

X2. If your going to keep the rig next to your house on a permenant basis, then having a 30 amp outlet added is the smart way to go.
Parts, depending on how long a wire run is shouldn't run more than $50 bucks, and a good electrician should be able to wire it up in less than an hour.
Did ours myself, and keep our Lexi plugged in 24/7 when not on the road.

If you put in a 30 amp service at your house, make sure it is 120V. If it is wired 240V, you will be replacing a lot of electronics!

Actually, I am only parking to load and unload for travel (48 hours max) My HOA provides a storage area but no power. I'm having an electrician do another job so I'll check out all this advice. I will probably ask a lot of questions here... The replies have been great. And, I am a person who wants to understand potential problems so I can avoid them.

When I return in the fall I'll have an electrician put in a 50 amp. Going to be about 75' from the breaker box. Hate to think about the cost but getting it done.

75' of #6 4-wire cable isn't cheap. If you just want to run the a/c while loading and unloading why not put in just 30 amp service? #8 3-wire is a lot less expensive.

Don't need much but to top off the battery and run AC just while loading and unloading. So, you may have a point all needed is a dog bone to connect the 50 amp up with then...

You may get by on the 30 amp for your rig, but what happens if, down the line, you add a second ac, or up grade to something larger. Or if you want to run more than just your ac, along with a few appliances.
Granted, the 50 amp wire will cost more, but it's a one shot/one time purchase.
I did a 30 amp for our Lexi class c, but have no plans for anything larger. If, however I had a unit requiring 50 amp, than I'd have gone that route.
Just my 2 cents.

I don't store the 5er at home and no one will ever stay in it here. Simply to load, unload, and top the battery the day before we leave. The main AC is ducted, would not use both here. There is a GS /KOA about 4 miles away if it is needed ~~ but the 2 of us built a 4 BR / 4 BA home for friends and relatives to use when they visit, plus my daughter has a 3 BR vacation home 12 minutes away.
