sleeper couch slopes

I have two padded 2x4 shafts covered in the same leather as the couch. Each has a single "foot" sticking out. I'm sure they are supposed to give the couch support when opened into a bed. I can't figure out how they attach. Does anyone have an idea? Bought the rig in January and had the first outing last weekend.

They are used to extend the width of the sofa after your remove the arm rests. They fit in the slot where the arm rests were.
