Why does cold air blow out of the ac ducts when the heat is on?

Are you running a heat pump? A heat pump does not blow hot air like a gas furnace or heat strips.

Comes up a lot on the forum. Set the thermostat to fan. Use + or - buttons to set fan to auto (not hi or Lo). Set thermostat back to furnace setting. Fan will now stay off with furnace, will cycle on and off with AC. Set on hi or Lo the AC fan will run continuously. Some like this as the fan "circulates the air" and the fan noise helps mask the furnace noise.
