We have a 3170ds and tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have all Roadmaster parts; base, plate, Sterling tow bar, Evenbrake braking system. We have been happy with setting up and using this system so far.

If you search "toad brake" on the site search engine, I think that we give you a good start with your research.

Happy travels...

We have a 3170DS and use a Blue Ox system with a SMI Stay-IN-Play braking system on a CR-V. Our dealer did an amazing job, the main unit is hidden in the engine compartment, all wire and vacuum tuping are neat and zip tied securely. The activation switch is on the wall left of the brake pedal and a perfect fuse cut off switch blends in perfectly with other on-board switches. A behind the rear view mirror LED indicator allows me to know via the rear view camera on the rig that the braking system is operating properly.

I'm sure that the Roadmaster comparable products are fine too, but we are very happy with our Blue-Ox and SMI.

Ready brute elite tow bar with Brake works well for us. Several jeep owners on the forums use it as well. Haven't heard any with issues or complaints. Simple to set up if you are a diy person.

x4 with the Patriot. But if I were doing it again I would look at the system that uses a cable to pull the brake pedal when you slow down. Blue Ox has one and I think Ready Brute has one.

I did a video on my setup if you are interested.

x2! Great setup, simple, less things to go wrong IMO.

We tow a 2014 CRV.

Gain

Brake systems vary, but I like having the abilty to control the "gain" from the dash. I see the toad as an aux brake to the coach system for "extra" braking when needed, not a constant variable defined by a fixed porportional valve if that is how they work. Set at 4-5, given the jk weight at about 4600) it begins to kick in at about 1/3 brake pedal. Gain has other uses such as correcting a toad sway event, pinch the gain a bit and it will apply a little drag to the toad and give you an arrow... Heard it has been used for f250 bump steer while towing bumper heavy but never witnessed it.. Educate me...

Brake system for toad

I use an RVI2 and have gotten good results. Easy setup and very compact. It is designed to push against the seat pan but in the event the pan is too shallow, they have adapters that connects to the seat frame. Mine is now 3 years old, no lockups works well. However, I can not recommend the optional TPMS system. Use the Mont for a proper TPMS system.
I have no clue how the new RVI3 does. Those may bear a little research.

low to go

Looking at the rvi2 the profile looks like an avantage as the patriot is a tad tall requiring a twist and slide install. Also using the floor pan as the backstop seems nice. After getting the patriot I did build a floor base plate for te same effect.... who knew.. I did not read it, but I assume the rvi2 is also all electric (no hydro parts)..

The RVI2 is about 2.5" tall. It operates on a small built in air pump that operates a small air cylinder. No hydro parts. The brake foot is connected to the air cylinder. The air cylinder is adjustable. It slides forward to allow brake engagement. I would guess all are length adjustable.

this is what we use. We used to tow a 2001 Wrangler, now we tow a 2014 Wrangler JKU Sahara. I installed a vacuum pump that is powered by the motorhome to provide power brakes. I also ran a separate harness and use add on lights so I did not have to tie into the jeeps wiring harness. Great system and works as a proportional/surge braking system works great!

Bought rvi2 and used it today. Very easy to use and appears to work great.

Garrette, we use the RVi3. Easy and quick to install and remove. Small enough to slip into an old backpack for storing. I would rather have a phone app than their tablet (too big) and that was my feedback to their survey. Other than that, very satisfied.

That is good to hear. So, it comes with its own pad. I just assumed there was an iPhone app for that. Makes sense to have a dedicated receiver. Do you need to keep it plugged in to work or does it have a rechargeable battery?

Garrette, it is an Android tablet so it has a battery. There is a hub however that provides a WiFi connection between the RVi3 and the tablet that does not. It must be plugged into USB in order for the tablet to interact with the brake. The brake will function just fine without the hub and tablet but you lose the feedback on when the brake is applying.
