Can't get water filter canister off - help!

Ready to winterize our new 2014 Sunseeker 3050, can't get the water filter canister off no matter what I have tried. I have the plastic wrench that was given and have also relieved pressure nothing works. I think maybe Arnold S. Must have put in on. Any suggestions ? Thanks

Sometimes it just takes brute force. You may want to hold the mounting bracket and just put the muscle to it. If you get it off, when you put it back, lube the o-ring and the threads with silicon grease. Next time will be much easier. Remember to do the Threads!!

If you are facing the canister, put the wrench on the right side and pull toward you. Make sure you are holding the base(top) to keep from breaking the base. When you get it off, make sure you get some Danco Silicone grease (Lowes/HD) and lube the "O" ring and the base and the top of the canister and the threads on the base and canister. Next time will be much easier.

Thanks to both of you, I guess all I can do is keep trying, stopped for now and will try again tomorrow. It's just a little frustrating when you thought your winterizing would be done on one day. Will be sure and get the lubricate on your advice, don't want to go through this again. Thanks again l

Once you get the filter housing off, mark the direction with a sharpe. Put an arrow on it so you know which way is OFF next time. Counter clockwise is OFF.

Mine is clockwise for off if viewed from the top, front or bottom it has rh threads.
Right-Tight; Left -Loose.

For issues like this I have found heating the thread area with a heat gun sometimes works. Another option is a moderate smack on the wrench handle with a rubber hammer or piece of wood will break it free.

Thanks for all of the advice, we have tried every which way and nothing seems to work, hoping to have winterizing all behind me yesterday, but, didn't work out, everything was ready to go until this roadblock. I guess I will have to call FR since my dealer is 300 mi. away, even tho they are the ones that put it on to begin with. Just bought this motorhome in Aug. But, thanks again I will let you know how it turns out.

I imagine you could find a Mobile RV Tech in your area to take care of it. It might be cheaper to just break it off and replace it however.

I moved mine from under the counter to outside. I bought the almost identical unit at Lowes for $29.95... if I remember right. Only difference is the canister is white and not clear. I made a place to hang it right by the water hookup. My last house had a well and this size filter, so I have replacement cartridges. It was just too much hassle under the cabinets.

Just take the whole filter assembly off at the fittings. You should be able to clamp it in a vice or something and get leverage to take it apart. Worse case if it breaks just go to Lowes or Walmart and pick up another for about $30. That would be cheaper than going back 300 miles to the dealer with it for them to fix.

After struggling with mine at the end of a few seasons, and once it came loose, it always seemed to spill it's contents onto the carpeted portion of the pass-through compartment, and THEN having it leak the first trip out in 2012, I eliminated it, and now carry a filter that sits on the ground next to the TT, where I run a hose from the hose bib to the filter, then a short hose to the TT.

I agree, remove the unit and work on the bench. Also, I have a plastic threaded nipple that connects the lines together, bypassing putting any antifreeze in canister. That will allow you to winterize and work on filter later, most big hardware stores should carry them.

There may still be pressure in the system.

The canister will NOT unscrew with even 1 psi of water pressure.

Open a faucet and try again.

Wet a hand towel then heat it in the microwave and wrap it around the top of the filter housing, you may have to do it more than once to get the head of the filter to expand a little and turn loose.

Sounds like most have given you great advice can only say be persistent. I just took mine off this morning and I really had to put muscle into it to get it to loosen. Maybe a thought to help: take your right hand and point your thumb in the direction you want the filter to go, curl your fingers a bit and they then point in the direction to twist the wrench (most know this as the right hand rule, applies to most threaded items, with some exceptions, propane fittings being one). That may help in knowing your not then putting all your effort into tightening the filter. The idea about heating the top is also good. You are trying to get a little expansion on the top while the filter stays the same size that way giving a little room between the threads. Good luck!

Finally a end to the saga of removing our filter canister. We finally gave up, called a younger and probably stronger neighbor friend. When he tried it nothing, would not even budge like us. Then he went home, brought back a steel 30 in. Steel pipe, inserted the filter canister wrench handle into one end of the pipe. Then slipped the the wrench onto the canister. He held onto the top of the canister then pulled on the pipe for leverage and off it came. Wow ! Could not believe it was over. We made sure we lubricated it before it was put back on after taking out the filter. Now, hoping none of you ever have this problem, but if you do, keep a pipe handy, just be sure and hold the canister for stability so no damage is done. Thanks for everyone's help and advice. Now on to finishing the winterizing tomorrow after a good nights rest.
