Chassis VIN vs. coach VIN

Hello all,

So I've been told by my dealer that there is a internal Forest River VIN on my coach that differs from the chassis VIN that Ford gave my coach. I called this descrepency out when I was reviewing my extended warranty paperwork and saw the two seperate VINs.

Does anybody have any idea at all where I find this internal Forest River VIN on my coach? I've looked at all the stickers where Ford put all theirs, and there is nothing w/ this different Forest River VIN on it.

Thanks !

I dont think it is on the coach. It’s just an internal number that the builder uses for the body build. The chassis vin is the one on your title however the model year is governed by the body build. You may be able to get a copy of the MSO from your dealer. That should have it listed.

Well I know what the coach VIN is b/c its on my warranty paperwork. However my free year of CoachNet was filled out w/ the coach VIN - which of course the tow guy or whoever shows up will never be able to verify.

I just switched the VIN back to the chassis on my membership.

I don't think all motorhomes use the 2 vin system. The only VIN you usually ever have to be concerned with is the one on the yellow sticker that should be by the driver's seat. I believe on my Gtown the chassis and coach VINs are the same.

The Forest River VIN for our rig is posted on a series of stickers on the back wall of some cupboards above the sofa. It lists a number for the Ford vehicle part, and another that Forest River recognizes. In our case, there was a difference of two years between the years of manufacture.

Our FR completed vehicle VIN was in the drivers door frame. IIRC our FR VIN started with 4X4 as the lead part of the VIN. I had two MSO documents, one from Ford for an incomplete 2016 chassis and the second from FR for the completed vehicle with the 4X4 VIN number. Georgia DMV used the Ford 2016 VIN to register and title the motor home as a 2018 model year Sunseeker.

What is a MSO doc? Sorry for the newbie question.

I'm sure what the dealer put in my warranty form was correct as it did start w/ a 4x4 number, the OCD part of me just wants to see it somewhere for myself !

MSO: Manufactures Statement of Origin. It is the legal document used to create the Title when sold to the end user...

Has nothing to do with fiance. The MSO goes to the State to get the Title. If your dealer did the title and registration (for a whopping fee), they send it in.

The FR VIN on my 2012 Lexington is on the door frame to the cabin. I have also heard of them inside a cabinet or drawer in the kitchen area.

Here both MSO's are submitted to the State to generate the Title. If there is a lien holder they get the Title.

I always get a copy of both MSOs, for my records, when we do the paperwork at the dealership...

Just a though; This can be a very important subject. Here’s why. I heard there were two recalls that effected my 2014 Coachmen. One for the trailer hitch and one for the step. So I went to NHTSA to look it up. Plugged in my VIN and NOTHING! That was due to the recall being on the coach builder and not the chassis builder. So the VIN on my title got me nowhere. I ended up calling Coachmen to find out what the story was.

I didn't know about it until we bought our first motor home. Here you need both as Georgia looks at the GVWR of the vehicle when issuing plates. So our dealers Finance Manager provides copies of both to the buyer in case there are any questions at the county tag office.

Too bad. Had they registered it as a 2016, you would probably save each year on personal property tax.

look up RVIA Split model year builds,in NYS it's the DMV title that has the lien
My Concord is a 2014 chevy chassis, however the camper is a Forest River 2015 which is the MSO and after some back and forth with disreputable rv dealer in another state,NYS DMV registered as a New 2015 FR Concord

It wouldn't help... Here we pay a one time 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) based on the vehicles value. But after that is $1.00 a year to renew your license plates...
