Spray products will also set off the detectors, I wonder if your son in the bathroom was using spray deodorant, or fragrance to mask the poop smell?

I set ours off in our 2012 VCross Lite VFK27 by spraying a cookie sheet with Pam. Looking on the Internet, Pam uses propane for propellant. Another DOH! moment as I learn the care and feeding of a travel trailer.

Ours didn't reset automatically as a smoke detector will. I had to turn off shore power, then disconnect and reconnect the 12V to reset it.
