Custer SP/MT Rushmore/Crazy Horse

We are planning a trip which includes staying in Custer SP and visiting the local monuments. We have a Sunseeker 2250 and do NOT tow. I have seen some videos of tunnels on the Needles Hwy and am concerned we won't be able to navigate. But when I map the trip on the Good Sam Trip Planning tool it does not show any warnings. Has anyone driven in this area? Perhaps I should ask if like me, this is your first RV and you have only owned it a few months.

There are two highways that you could have problems with. One is the needles highway (highway 87 & the other is 16A. Here is link to the Custer State Park map which includes info on the tunnels. Surf the Custer State park website. It is great for information.

You will definitely have an issue. I felt uncomfortable driving through the tunnels with my Trailblazer! There are a lot of ways to get around and a lot to see. Drive the wildlife loop if you have a chance. If you want an in depth overview PM me and I can provide a podcast link with lots of info.

Another couple of pics from last fall. The tightest tunnels are on the Needles Highway. The there is the Iron Mountain Road with it's Pigtail bridges.

A couple of years ago were at the same tunnels that someone posted pictures of and we saw a passenger bus inch its way through them.

When we drove our Ram truck with the mirrors in the tow position I had to flip them in against the door windows to pass thru the tunnels other wise they would rub the walls. This was on the needles highway RT87. You could rent a car for the day if you want to drive the needles highway.

When we traveled the Needles Hwy back in 2000 (we were on motorcycle), we were behind a large tour bus which was inching it's way trough tunnel.
The passengers had to get off and walk in front of the bus to the other side. Driver turned in the outside mirrors, he lowered the air ride suspension. When he got to the other side he had scratches on sides of roof. If you are smaller than a tour bus you should be able to make it.
As Jim34RL said you can rent a car to tour the area.
The area is beautiful you will want to be comfortable and not stressed.
