I'm not saying my way is the best way, but it has worked well for me. I put down a bed of 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant Fast Cure 5200 under the mounts. I then put two stainless steel screws through each mount into pre-drilled holes. The last step was to cover the mounts with Dycor.

The panels have been on the roof for about two and a half years and are holding nicely.

I did similar - adhesive plus SS screws - but used Dicor self leveling both under and over the mounts. Also added four extra mounts to the panel. Five + years, probably 70K miles, no issues.

Do you look for the roof stud to screw in or it does not matter. (with a stud detector).

I did not look and do not think any of my screws are into a roof stud. Just screwed to the roof plywood through the fiberglass.

Same here. I considered position on the roof relative to other items which might cast shadows more important than hitting a stud. The panels are quite secure mounted as they are.

I used inch stainless screws. I coated the screw threads with adhesive before driving them in.
