Fresh water fill question

So I'm trying to figure out for the first time how to actually fill my fresh water tank. On my last RV, it was a simple matter of turning a valve while I was connected to "city" water. On my Sunseeker, there's a separate opening on the passenger side of my rig supposedly for this purpose...however it's not a threaded opening, it's just an opening with a cover and when I stick a hose in there, the water just comes back out. It seems like I would have to use a funnel and do this verrrrry slowly. Why on earth would they design this like this, or am I just missing something?

Many (most?) units have fresh water fill as you have described. All 4 of my trailers did/do. I have no problem filling my FW tank just by sticking the white hose in the unthreaded opening and turning on the water full force. For yours to blow back, I'd say you have
1. a kink in your fill hose or
2. a low point in your fill hose which P-traps water or
3. a problem with your FW tank vent which is intended to allow air in the tank to be replaced with water. (We've heard of some vents that weren't attached to the tank correctly and some which had a low point which P-trapped air.)

OK I'll try again...my fresh water tank isn't in a position for me to easily see how much is actually going into it vs. coming back out, but SOME water got into it. It's flowing out because there's almost no angle to my freshwater fill...it's almost horizontal. Is there any reason not to do what some others have described here and put a valve controlled feed into the freshwater tank than feeds off the city water input?

Nope. Have at it. What about filling it a bit slower. And if your close to the fill port you can hear when its about full. Just sayin'

True...it's also got an overflow right at the same place, so good point. If I'm out there doing it I see that right away. Maybe I can rig some kind of funnel connection with a hose that gives me a little more pitch too

Notice!! be careful with this item, you could/can turn your FWT into a "Water Balloon"!High pressure water with lots of flow will overcome the little "Air Vent"! Youroo!!
