Generator Hours

I was checking the hour meter in our 2016 Sunseeker mbs2400s to see if I needed to change the generator oil, imagine my surprise when it said 644.5 hours. We only ran it to run the slide out or if we stopped to eat and run the A/C, If we used it over 2O hours I would be very shocked. I actually took a reading while connected shore power to make sure that wasn't causing it to count. Did we get a used meter? That's 27 days ! We camped about 35 days last year, only dry 2 nights and only ran it to run the slide out and in those times.

I would definitely want an answer to that question because the hours would probably affect resale value. I am not sure how good these meters are though. I had one on a John Deere riding mower that quit after a couple seasons. Then suddenly it came back on but I don't recall if the hours were accurate or if it had reset.

Generator hours

My 2016 is in for service and dealer called and said the generator has 1,000 hours on it and needs certain service. We rarely use the generator and I have been racking my brain to figure out how it could have 1,000 hours, but I can only conclude there is something wrong with the meter.

maybe someone mis-read the meter OR is looking to do some "make-work" money. Ask them to re-check the meter reading, or go over and read it yourself.

Yeah, I told them NOT to do the work. I think they may be misreading by a facotr of 10 (like missing a decimal). They checked the paperwork and said last time it was in it had 830 hours, I am guessing the real number was 83.0.

Dealership probably ran it often to show customers.

Did you buy the unit new or used?

Some of those engine hour meters will accumulate time if they have control power to them even without the engine running. That's the way the meter on my Husqvarna lawn mower works. Could it be something was supplying power to the meter without the generator actually running?

Or they could just be missing the decimal point too.

Dmerserau,

sorry for the delay. I needed to talk to a couple people and get their feedback. it is possible the meter had the wrong hot wire hooked up to it. it should come from the generator so it only runs when the generator is on, but it sounds like it may be running all the time when you have the battery disconnect on.

So I took a look when I got it back from the dealer and the last digit clearly says it refers to 1/10th, and there is a decimal in the display. So I have 105 hours on it, not 1050. Thankfully I did not pay for the extra generator service.
