Generator Question

Does running the generator charge the coach batteries directly or only power the converter which in turn charges the coach batteries.
In other words, if I have a bad converter does running the generator do anything for the coach batteries.

The generator does the same thing plugging in to shore power does.

Supplies 120VAC to the unit. That means that it powers the converter which charges the batteries and provides a supply of 12V power.

Units without transfer switches have to plug their shore power cord into the generator.

However, If the convertor is bad I think it will not supply any 12V power, The engine alternator will supply a little 12V power regardless of the convertor status (I think).

The engine alternator will charge the coach batteries, which in turn will supply 12v to the coach. The generator will not supply 12v to the coach or charge the batteries except through the converter.

If you have a bad convertor you won't have 12 volts to anything, so no, the generator won't charge your batteries. You won't have lights, etc., either.

If you have a bad converter, you can run the generator and charge the batteries with a standard car battery charger plugged into a 110 outlet.
