hooking up solar trickle charger

I have a charger that I used in my old class A. I had easy access to the coach batteries (via step that lifted up inside door) so hooking up the charger to the battery terminl was quite easy.

Now with my Class C Sunseeker, the coach batteries are in the same basic location (under the steps). But the cover is held down with two screws. Not very conventient to take on and off each time you want to hook up the trickle charger.

I'm trying to come up with some way to have the step easily removable. Has anybody else done this? Don't want to reinvent the wheel if somebody else came up with an easy solution.

You can find screws with small plastic knobs at the hardware store that should work. I use a battery tender that comes with an adapter you can leave hooked up to the battery and route under the back edge of the step. You then can plug and unplug without removing the step.

I often leave the screws out and the step hasn't moved. You could cut off short pieces of all thread rod and leave them stick up through the step a little. Then just lift the step off over them when you want to remove it.

I think that something like this battery tender harness might be adaptable as a solution as a quick connect device that you could install permanently on the batts then run the wire out a small hole for easy connection without having to unscrew the steps.

(Lots of folks use these on motor scooters/cycles to have an easy way to recharge without having to unbolt stuff.) Obviously, you could dummy something like this up with some wire and a crimp tool but this is so cheap, it is hardly worth the trouble.

You can run the wires through the holes in the back of the battery box to a convenient permanent place to hook up your charger. Just remember that they will be hot so have a way to cap the connector.

Why not just wire in a plug. I'd probably use something like this:


Just make sure the hot is shielded.

Thanks for the suggestions. The step is very heavy and not likely to move much. Some heavy duty velcro might just do the trick.
