Cash. I buy everything with greenbacks, including the Windjammer I picked up this weekend.

In Canada, there is no hold on that debit transaction. If I authorize up to $100, for instance, and only use $66.45, then my debit card is charged $66.45. There is no hold on the $100. Perhaps in the U.S. it is different.

I apparently bought 7 iphones last week, got a phone call at 10:30pm and the charges were immediately reversed. Peace of mind - priceless.
When your debit card gets skimmed you're screwed big time, that money is gone for good.
The only drawback is, you never want to miss a payment once.
We have had our debit card skimmed twice on us in the past five years. In both instances, the bank has returned the funds, no questions asked.

Good for you, but it's usually not that easy.

It is different since we are just now getting the "chipped" or "smart" credit cards plus PIN. The anti-fraud technology Canada, and the rest of the world, have had for years... After the full deployment of the new cards, and new readers, we should start seeing near real time transactions like you...

X2 Pilot/FlyingJ card. Don't have to go inside, just slide, code, pump and go.

I also have the BillPay app that tells me every time a charge is made on ANY of my cards real time. If someone else uses my account, I'm notified in seconds.

Credit card only. Have one we keep specifically for traveling. Can check charges online and get called when not used for gas or food.
