All credit cards do this, have for all the time I know of, (ex; if you go to a motel, when you check in they ask for a card, they will put a large hold on the card at that time, when you go to a restaurant it is the same the amount you just charged is held until the company uploads their machine to their card company then it is charged to your account.)
This is the way it works, just look at your account online just after any charge it is in hold mode.
SO yes you are corre3ct that it could a few hundred dollars, you will be lucky if you have a large motorhome and drive cross country it will be into the thousands and that will be just for fuel, one of the ways around this is get a private fuel card (Mobil, gulf etc. or as I have I own a Flying J card and get the most in discount while having a separate credit card for fuel.
Hope this helps and Happy Camping
