I used my debit card for years and never got bit. But now I strictly use the CC unless I need to grab cash from an ATM. Credit card as said above is 45 days free money, I never pay interest either and pay it off every month. On a big trip I usually also keep a couple hundred in cash just in case. But for diesel it's always the CC. I have a Cabelas Visa and it buys more camping stuff. I did pay cash for the trailer though.

I use a credit card that gives cash back. I have an OBD2 reader connected and use the Torque app to monitor my RV. One of the monitoring points is % until empty. I use that and figure out how much I need to fill the 55 gallon tank. Multiply that by the price per gallon (minus any discounts like Flying J) and that's what i tell the cashier to put on the card. I never loose site of the card and have a receipt to match to the online transaction statement.
My 2 cents

Paying for gas
Always with a bank credit card other than Costco ( which is always the cheapest gas in town)... Then I use debit.

The HOLD only applies to DEBIT cards. Not CREDIT cards. If your account is being held for CC purchases, something is wrong. Contact your bank...

I never use it as a debit at a pump. That explains it for me.

Same for me. I use my debit/credit and always put it as credit.
I see those signs on every pump about a hold being put on it, but in several years, I have never actually seen one.
Since my debit/credit is Mastercard, I have the same protection as any Mastercard against unauthorized charges.
Been RV'ing for the last 20 years, never had a problem.

We were in town yesterday,,, Portage & Three Rivers MI,,, gas was running $260 most every where,,, went to Sam's it was $225 !!! Young man working there a couple of weeks back told me the only reason Sam's added the Gas station was because Costco was coming to town,,, and was going to sell gas !!!

Ok so I was filling at the pilot yesterday and noticed a sign on the pump that "cash price is 6 cents less than posted price".....and many times I see signs that flip between cash/credit price..
So In those situations if you use your debit/ credit and get say 5% back (about 12 cents a gallon in this case) it's moot since your paying 6c more for using the card..
But I digress....I usually carry plenty of cash (not particularly worried about getting robbed unless it's my wife/kids) and also my debit, an amex AND a visa (some places don't take amex)
My debit is fraud protected and worst case scenario I would be out a MAX of 50$ in the event of loss (I was hacked through home depot earlier this year and they bought 7200$ in car parts ...TWICE! !!..bank saw it, turned off card, called me, and then took charges off.....same day..didn't even charge me the 50$)...
I preferr cards whenever possible...easier, better accounting, and safer for most part than me dropping a 50$ bill in parking lot. ..I've never seen a hold for more than a few $ on my debit and even then they are always marked as (pending) and never batch out with my transactions at night??..
