How hot does your V 10 run?

In the Blackhills this last week it was in the 90s. going west from Rapid City on Highway 16. On two long grades engine running about 4000 rpm heat gauge climbed to the very right of the normal range and it seemed to cut the A.C. off. I let off the gas a bit and when we got to the top of the grade tranny shifted, rpms went back down and then needle quickly returned to the center. Anybody else have this happen? it must of got hot to shut the A.C. off (compressor not fan) Other than that everything ran fine

Never noticed that with mine. Might want to do a coolant flush just to be on the safe side.

How old is your RV and how many miles on your unit ? Ours is 2 years old with only 15k miles. No over heating problems climbing large grades in Utah.

We have an FR3 with the V10 and live in Las Vegas. We seem to be constantly headed for home when it's 110+ and have a couple of big grades and (thankfully)we have never had an issue with the temp rising and cycling off the AC. Our Subaru will cycle the AC, but not the V10. I do not twist a wrench, but feel extremely qualified to talk about severe heat---get it checked out.

Couple of things I noticed here from the old RV we had (2006 Class A with a V-10). First, any engine is going to heat up when climbing a grade. As long as it stays within the normal range (either end of it), you should be good. The AC cutting out? There is typically an electronic device that will shut off the AC compressor when the engine is running at a certain RPM or under enough load; this is meant to temporarily cut out the compressor load when more power is needed and has nothing to do with engine temperature. Also keep in mind that not only your engine is heating up under that sort of load; your transmission is heating up, too. And since your transmission is cooled by the same radiator as the engine, you will see a rise in temperature. If you're concerned over it, I would suggest you invest a couple hundred bucks in a ScanGage and mount it on the dash. It will monitor every possible factor in your engine and keep you alerted to whatever set of conditions you want to watch with great detail. If your system is overheating, you'll see the temp climb rather than relying on a needle in the dash gauge. I have also been told by a mechanic friend that a V10 that runs too cool is inefficient and your fuel mileage will suffer, so you want the happy medium when it comes to engine temp. If I remember correctly, that happy medium was around 220F.

we have a 2013 3100ss with the V10 on a Ford E450 chassis with 23000 miles on the odometer. We also use the 5 Star Tune and have noticed a climb in temp when climbing steep grades. We have also noticed on many occasions that the fan and the ac shut off when you are at WOT which we occasionally are when climbing some of the steeper grades out west. I would say that this is normal and have never concerned myself with it FWIW.

Our 2012 Lexington is kinda weird. When we came home from So. Cal several weeks ago it was about 95 degrees when we went up the long, steep grade on US 395 north of Bishop Ca. and the temp gauge actually goes down slightly. It does it every time on big grades. I try to keep the rpm's in the 3 to 3500 range.

We have a 2012 Lexi 283ts. Have a Scan Guage I installed. On hot days, 90 degrees or so, towing our Subi Crosstrek, temp runs around 200 deg. at 60-65 mph. Up a grade may climb to 205-208. Down a grade will drop to 197-200. Hottest it has ever gone was 215, at which time the electric fan kicked in and temp went down to 205-208.
Going up some pretty steep grades on our currant trip, NW USA, Canada, Alaska, temps have not gone over 205, up a 7-8 % grade for 2-3 miles. Drop down very fast to 195-197 when going down grade.
You really don't have to be concerned until temp reaches above 230. But you should be more concerned with the trans fluid temps, as when the coolant temps go up, so do the trans fluid temps.

Did I read in this thread that some of the V10's have electric fans? My 2016 E350 Super Duty V10 has a belt driven fluid clutch driven fan.

My bad...I was thinking of the electric fan in my Subi Crosstrek. Ford E-450 has a clutch fan, but it dosen't kick in until around 215 degrees.

I saw 220 this week. It does cut the ac on steep grades when I downshifts to fourth.

It's hard to tell the actual temp with the stock gauges...I like to use a scan gauge and keep the actual coolant and transmission temp up all the time.....mine runs anywhere from 195 to 215 but the stock gauge never moves....average is right around 200.

One thing to note....the ac cutting out may not have anything to do with the temp. Some ac units will cut out when your right foot is asking for more power than is available....common on long grades...

Thanks again for your replies. Had it checked out yesterday they didn't find anything wrong but they did the reprograming for the emission recall. After Goshen have to get scan gauge and keep an eye on it

Skip the scan gauge and go with a live wire from 5 star.
Tune and gauge all in one
