An alternative is a strap wrench. Probably find one at Northern Tool or Harbor Freight.

If you take the pressure off you just might be able to turn it off by hand.

I have a hard time using that wrench in my trailer. Not only is the filter in an awkward position the filter canister is pinned right up against the wall and very hard to get the tool in the right position.

That's why there are places on the canister every 90 degrees to allow the wrench to engage them so you can get at least one good "bite" to start the loosening process.
