Jeep Liberty Toad Question

I am pulling a 2005 Jeep Liberty behind a 3170DS. We want to update to a newer model of the Jeep Liberty but have been told the gross weight is 5200 lbs. With a towing limit of 5000 lbs.

So does anyone have experience towing the new look Libertys (2008 and past) and should I be concerned about a minor deviation in gross weight

That's awfully heavy. Something lighter would certainly help fuel mileage and braking

That's sorta exceeding the hitch rating, towbar, and MH chassis. Yes I would certainly be concerned, in a following vehicle

Isn't the tow rating on your 3170 7500 lbs? Yes it is a bit heavier but with a proper setup and aux brakes you should be just fine. I'm more surprised that a Liberty weighs as much as a Tahoe.

The gross weight is the max the Liberty can carry including passengers and cargo. with no passengers and not loaded to the max with cargo you should be closer to the listed curb weight.

Jeep Liberty

We tow a 2011 Jeep Liberty with a 2012 32 ft Sunseeker with no problem. We have towed it over 15,000 miles including the mountains out west and you don't even know it's back there. Love my Jeep & Sunseeker!!!!

We tow a Jeep cherokee latitude at 4000# curb weight. Newest dinghy towing guide doesnt list the liberty but every Jeep model listed is at 4000# or so. Heaviest is Grand Cherokee at 4600#

I think the 3170ds is listed at 7500 lbs towing or at least ours is. We tow the Liberty with stuff in it and never had an issue. I think the Liberty might be the ultimate tow vehicle. It's certainly the easiest to get set up for towing. Going up and down mountains I can't say I don't know its behind us but we've always made it without issue.

I have a 2011 Jeep Liberty Automatic. 4X4, what type of setup did you do? Did flat toe or Dolly....I have a Dolly. But not sure of the pre-set up is.

We tow 4 down using a Blue OX face plate and tow bar and use a brake Buddy. To Tow the Liberty you just put the transfer case in neutral (instructions in the owners manual) and go. I did install a power outlet directly off the battery (with a fuse) to power the brake Buddy. That way I don't have to turn on the ignition. The Liberty doesn't have a steering column lock so no problem there.

That may be true depending on your Liberty year model. Our '05 Liberty does in fact have a steering lock so we do need to turn the key one notch before driving off.
Our power outlet is hot all the time though.

Just double check if you need to turn the key on or not. I don't what year models do and don't require you to turn them on first.
