Looking for best advice on oil for V10 and Onan
Just getting ready to take delivery of our new Mint 2013 3010DS.
Doing online research, I have seen a wide range of "advice" on what engine oil to use in the V10. MFR says 5W-20, but opinions vary all over the place online. The rig currently has 23000 miles on it.
Can some of you please tell me what has worked best for you in the 6.8 V10?
Also, what weight oil are you finding best for the Onan 4000. (Currently with 130 hours total) We are currently stationed in Oklahoma, so wide temp ranges down to occasional teens in the winter and 100+ in summer.
Thanks!

I used Mobil one on my 2019 3010ds. Says that i can change once a year. But i will change according to manufacturer guidelines.
Have not changed oil on my 4kw Onan yet.

How would you know what oil works best for you? Follow the manufacturers recommendation. The Engineers that designed and built it know what it should use more than an owner who might only put 5-10,000 miles a year on it. The only way to know if an oil is "working" properly is to have samples of it tested. Any of the oils recommended by the manufacturer will work just fine.

What weight did you use for the Mobil1? I DO like synthetics...especially Royal Purple.

Fords are "notorious" for oil problems... V-10s are included in that. I am not saying there is anything wrong, before the haters begin. What I am saying is to follow OEM standards or BETTER on service. DO NOT use any product that does not meet or exceed OEM standards...regardless of brands. I like Shaeffers products, but if I owned a Ford I would prolly use the best Motorcraft oil available. YMMV

Opinions on motor oil are like navels, we all have one. The only correct recommendation is use what the owners manual says to use.

Oil for V10
I have a 2010 6.8 V10 and the ford manual says use 5W- 20 Semi Synthetic. That's all I've ever used.

I use the Ford recommended weight oil in our coach below, 5w-20 for the 2016 V-10 and put in Mobil 1.
Our Onan 5500 calls for 10w-30 and I also run Mobil 1 in that.

Yep, never had any problems with any Ford I owned!!! I have used Walmart brand on my 2008 MH with Marvels Mystery Oil and it ran great. I haven't change the oil in the new MH yet. I have changed the oil in the Gen. used what it said in the manual, can't remember what brand right now.

You made a generalized statement that I try not to do.
Mr. Deuce I see your posts...so I know you have knowledge...prolly more than most. I spent lots of years dealing with parts and repairs on many types of cars. I have seen more than I remember and I have seen and heard many complaints of Ford oil problems beginning mostly with the 4.6L V-8. The problems were real.
Now the reason they had problems was because of failure to follow OEM specs and service intervals.
You can look it up or ask someone.

Motor Oil for V 10 and Onan generator
I just change my oil on my 2014 Sunseeker 2690S with the Ford V 10 . I used full synthetic Mobil 1 5w 20 with Mobil 1 filter . Synthetic just lines engine parts better when sitting. I change once a season no matter the mileage.
As for the Onan generator I use straight 30 W and also change once a season .

That is always any oil problem, owners! But, that is not a Ford problem. I don't care what brand you have, if you don't take care and follow recommendations, then you will have problems.

My 2010 Ford E450's Scheduled Maintenance Guide says to change the oil every 7500 miles EXCEPT for "Special Operating Conditions", when you should change it every 5000 miles. That's what I do. "Special Operating Conditions" includes "Towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads". Even if you don't tow a trailer, a motorhome is a heavy load.

What a lot of people don't realize, these new overhead cam engines use oil for more then just lubrication of the engine. They do a lot of different things using engine oil to cool the bottoms of pistons, cam fazing, turning on/off cylinders. All for fuel mileage and to pass the carbon foot print. So, changing oil at/with the Manufactures recommended intervals will preClyde any unnecessary problems later on. These are not your Grandfathers engines!

The owners manual will have a recommended viscosity and minimum API service rating. All oil containers have the API service rating on them. Mobile One has a service rating of SN plus. Quaker State Ultimate Durability also has a service rating of SN plus but a 5 quart jug of QS UD is $10 less.
From all of the spec sheets I have read on filters, Mobile one filters are the ones I will use.

In my 2016, I use the weight that is called for. In the generator, I use 30w regular oil.
The manual says you can use 10w-30 oil in the generator, if used in colder weather.
